后來，他又潛心研究老子和莊子的學(xué)說，并且對他們的學(xué)說有了深刻的理解。當(dāng)時，有不少人慕名而來，請他出去做官，他都一概謝絕，每天只是埋頭研究學(xué)問，或者和志同道合的人談?wù)撜芾怼ＫJ(rèn)為，只有這樣，才能得到永恒的快樂，活得充實自在。但是，又過了些年，朝廷一再派人來請他，他實在推辭不掉，只得答應(yīng)了，到朝廷中做了黃門侍郎。
到了京城，由于他的知識很豐富，所以無論對什么事情他都能說得頭頭是道，再加上他的口才很好，而且又非常喜歡發(fā)表自己的見解，因此每當(dāng)人們聽他談?wù)摃r，都覺得津津有味。當(dāng)時有一位太尉王衍，十分欣賞郭象的口才，他常常在別人面前贊揚郭象說：“聽象語，如懸河瀉水，注而不竭?！币馑际钦f，聽郭象說話，就好像一條倒懸起來的河流，滔滔不絕地往下灌注，永遠(yuǎn)沒有枯竭的時候。
后來，人們根據(jù)王衍的話，引申出“口若懸河”作為成語，用來形容某人能言善辯，講起話來滔滔不絕。
