世界上到底有沒有鬼？真正看見過鬼的人似乎也不多，可是幾千年來，許多人一聽鬼的故事就毛骨悚然?！肮怼边@個詞在英文里就是 ghost。
人死了，他的靈魂也就離開了人體，那么 to give up the ghost 就是“放棄靈魂”，也就是“死”。下面我們來舉個例子：
My poor old aunt was in bed with cancer for six months before she finally gave up the ghost.
我那可憐的老阿姨得了癌，在床上躺了半年后終于去世了。
To give up the ghost 不一定指人，它還可以用來說別的東西，比如那些磨損很利害無法修理的機器：
I need money to buy a new car. My old one is twelve years old and I'm afraid it’s ready to give up the ghost.
我需要錢去買一輛新車。我那輛老的汽車已經(jīng)開了十二年，恐怕是要完蛋了。"
