He tried to open the door but couldn't.
他試圖打開那門，但打不開。

a river of liquid rock,一股巖漿。
river在這里為比喻用法，表示“(……的)巨流”。由于 a river of 這個結(jié)構(gòu)中沒有 as, like等明確表示“像”的詞，因此，它是一種暗喻。
