1. break away
    突然逃掉或離開(kāi)。如:
    The thief broke away from the policeman. 小偷從警察那逃脫了。
    斷絕往來(lái),脫離。如:
    He broke away from all his old friends. 他同他所有的老朋友斷絕了往來(lái)。
    改掉,破除。如:
    You must break away from such habits. 你必須改掉那些習(xí)慣。
    2. break down
    壞了。如:
    The car broke down after an hour’s driving. 車子開(kāi)了一個(gè)小時(shí)就壞了。
    失敗。如:
    Our plans have broken down. 我們的計(jì)劃已失敗了。
    中斷。如:
    He broke down as he was singing. 他沒(méi)唱完就突然停住了。
    變壞。如:
    Her health broke down under the pressure of work. 工作的壓力把他的身體弄垮了。
    3. break in
    突然進(jìn)來(lái),強(qiáng)行進(jìn)入。如:
    He broke in and stole my money. 他闖進(jìn)來(lái)偷了我的錢。
    插嘴,打岔。如:
    He broke in with some ideas of his own. 他插話談了自己的一些想法。
    Please don’t break in on our conversation. 請(qǐng)不要打斷我們的談話。
    The secretary broke in to say that a telegram had just arrived. 秘書插話說(shuō)剛收到一個(gè)電報(bào)。
    注: 以上用法的 break in 通常是不及物的,但有時(shí)也用作及物動(dòng)詞,帶賓語(yǔ),表示:訓(xùn)練某人,使某人適應(yīng)。如:
    He is breaking in the new man as a machine operator. 我在訓(xùn)練那個(gè)新工人操作機(jī)器。
    Two weeks in the new office should be enough to break you in. 在新辦公室上兩星期的班便足以讓你適應(yīng)了。
    4. break into
    強(qiáng)行進(jìn)入。如:
    The thieves planned to break into a bank. 這些小偷計(jì)劃闖銀行。
    突然……起來(lái)。如:
    Hearing the news, she broke into tears. 聽(tīng)到這個(gè)消息,她就哭了起來(lái)。
    The man broke into a run when he saw the police. 那個(gè)人一看到警察,撥腿就跑。
    打斷,插嘴。如:
    He broke into the discussion with a shout of warning. 他大聲警告,打斷了討論。
    占用時(shí)間。如:
    Social activities break into my time. 社會(huì)活動(dòng)占去了我的時(shí)間。
    注: break into 與 break in 的有時(shí)可表示相同的意思,但前者通常為及物的,后者通常為不及物的。

    5. break off
    停止講話。如:
    He broke off in the middle of a sentence. 他一句話沒(méi)講完就停住了。
    暫停,休息。如:
    Let’s break up for a rest. 我們休息一會(huì)兒吧。
    折斷。如:
    The mast has broken off. 桅桿折斷了。
    6. break out 突然發(fā)生或爆發(fā)。如:
    A fire broke out during the night. 夜間發(fā)生了火災(zāi)。
    The 2nd World War broke out in September, 1939. 第二次世界大戰(zhàn)爆發(fā)于1939年9月。
    Influenza usually breaks out in winter. 流感通常發(fā)生在冬季。
    注: 是不及物動(dòng)詞,所以不能帶賓語(yǔ),也不能用于被動(dòng)語(yǔ)態(tài)。
    7. break through
    突破,有重要?jiǎng)?chuàng)見(jiàn)。如:
    Scientists say they’re beginning to break through in the fight against cancer. 科學(xué)家們說(shuō),他們?cè)诜乐伟┌Y方面開(kāi)始有所突破。
    克服,征服。如:
    You must try to break through your shyness. 你必須要設(shè)法克服羞怯。
    強(qiáng)行穿過(guò)。如:
    The enemy’s defences were strong but our soldiers broke through. 敵人的防線很艱固,但仍為我軍所突破。
    注: 有時(shí)指太陽(yáng)、月亮等從云層里出來(lái)。如:
    The sun broke through at last in the afternoon. 下午太陽(yáng)終于從云層里鉆了出來(lái)。
    8. break up
    解散,驅(qū)散。如:
    The police broke up the crowd . 警察驅(qū)散了人群。
    放假。如:
    When do you break up for Christmas? 你們什么時(shí)候放圣誕節(jié)假?
    結(jié)束,破裂。如:
    The weather shows signs of breaking up. 好天氣看樣要過(guò)去了。
    Their marriage is breaking up. 他們的婚姻瀕臨破裂。
    擊碎,撞碎。如:
    The ship broke up on the rocks. 船觸礁撞毀了。
    絕交。如:
    She’s just broken up with her boy-friend. 她剛與男朋友絕交。
