The American President-elect Barack Obama has warned that the United States could sink into a crisis. It may not be able to reverse unless urgent action is taken to deal with the economic downturn. In his first detailed speech on his economic program, Mr Obama promised a huge investment in the country's infrastructure and tax cuts for most working families. I know the scale of this plan is unprecedented, but so is the severity of our situation. We have already tried the wait-and-see approach to our problems. And it is the same approach that helped lead us to this day of reckoning. And that is why the time has come to build a 21st century economy in which hard work and responsibility are once again rewarded. That's why I'm asking Congress to work with me and my team day and night, on weekends if necessary, to get the plan passed in the next few weeks.
