The Ideal Husband
Science now might be able to explain women’s fascination with Brad Pitt’s face and George Clooney’s eyes. Women seem to __ 1__ potential mates by how masculine their features are, new research shows. Men with square jaws and well-defined brow ridges1 are seen as good short-term partners, __2__ those with more feminine traits such as a rounder face and fuller lips are perceived as better long-term mates.
In the study by Daniel Kruger at the US’s University of Michigan, 854 subjects viewed a series of __3__ head shots that had been digitally changed to exaggerate or minimize masculine traits2 They then __4__ questions about how they expected the men in the photos to behave.
Most participants said that those with more masculine features were __5__ to be risky, competitive, and more apt to fight, challenge bosses, cheat on spouses and put less effort into parenting. Those with more feminine __ 6__ were seen as good parents and husbands, hard workers and emotionally supportive mates.
But, despite all the negative characteristics, when asked who they would choose for a short-term relationship, women selected the more masculine __7__ men. Brad and George, both chiseled jaws and well-defined brows, then would be good for a __8__ romance, not for something longer.
The study was published in the December issue of the US journal Personal Relationships.
Kruger said that from an evolutionary perspective, this __9__ sense. The key is testosterone, the hormone responsible __10__ the development of masculine facial features and other sexual characteristics. It has been found to affect the body’s ability to fight disease: men with high levels of the hormone are typically __11__ and healthy- traits women want to pass on to their children.
However, increased testosterone has also been linked to __12__ and violence in relationships. So,these men __13__ produce high quality offspring, but they don’t always make great parents or faithful mates,Kruger says.
The scientific community have __14__ skepticism toward physiognomy, which links facial characteristics to certain behavioral traits. But Kruger argues that the research is a valuable tool for understanding mating strategies. And,of course, for explaining why Tony Leung and Takeshi Kanesshiro have millions of female __15__.It might have to do with their genes.Or something to do with ours.

    2. 直接解題:
    Science(科學(xué)) now might(可能) be able to (能夠) explain(解釋) women’s fascination with (對...的著迷)Brad Pitt’(布拉德. 皮特)s face(臉, 地形,面對) and George Clooney(喬治. 克魯尼)’s eyes(眼睛).
    1. A) make(制造, 成為, 構(gòu)成) B) judge(法官,裁判, 判斷,裁決) C) date(日期, 約會,約會) D) meet(遇見,迎接, 滿足(demand), 集會
    (sports meet/運動會))
    Women(婦女) seem to __ 1__ potential(潛在的,可能的) mates(配偶) by(根據(jù), 在附近,經(jīng)過, 用) how masculine(男性的,男子氣概的) their features(面容的特征, 特征, 特寫,是...的特色) are, new research(研究) shows(顯示,出示,展出, 展出(lantern show/燈展)).
    1.B 這四個詞的基本意思是:make:做;judge:判斷;date:約會:meet:見面。本文的主題是講女人找伴侶。從所在句子的表示方式的介詞短語by how masculine their features are(根據(jù)他們男性特征的情況),選擇judge在語義上比較一致。
    考點:常見小動詞的辨析。
    2. A) where(在哪里, ...的地方) B) when(什么時候,...的時候)
    C) while(當(dāng)...的時候, ) D) which(哪個,哪個的)
    Men with square(正方形的) jaws(下巴) and well-defined(輪廓分明的) brow ridges(眉骨) are seen as (被看作為...)good short-term(短期的) partners(伴侶), __2__ those with more feminine(女性的) traits(特征) such as(例如) a rounder(更圓的) face and fuller(充滿的,豐富的,吃飽的) lips(嘴唇) are perceived as (被認(rèn)為...)better long-term(長期的) mates(配偶, 伴侶).
    2.C 前后兩個小句表達(dá)的是一種對比,因此用while是對的。
    考點:狀語從句。
    3. A) female(女性的,婦女的, 女性) B) beautiful(美麗的)
    C) attractive(吸引人的) D) male(男的, 男性)
    In the study by(被..(進行的)研究) Daniel Kruger at the US’s University of Michigan(密歇根大學(xué)), 854 subjects(主題,研究對象, 學(xué)科) viewed(觀察, 景色,觀點) a series of(一連串的) __3__ head(頭, 頭腦, 領(lǐng)袖, 朝...前進) shots(連續(xù)鏡頭) that had been digitally(數(shù)字化地) changed(改變) to exaggerate(夸大, 夸張) or minimize(將...減到最小) masculine(男性的) traits(特征).
    3.D female:女性的;beautiful:漂亮的;attractive:吸引人的;male:男性的。該題問的是:854個調(diào)查對象看了一系列什么樣的頭部鏡頭?空格后帶的定語從句說“通過數(shù)字化使男性特征變得更突出或更不顯眼”, 因此這樣的連續(xù)鏡頭應(yīng)該是男子的鏡頭, 因此D是答案。
    4. A) answered(回答) B) asked(詢問, 要求)
    C) constructed(建造,構(gòu)造) D) built(建造)
They then __4__ questions about how they expected(期望) the men in the photos(照片) to behave(行為表現(xiàn), 舉止, behave yourself/要有禮貌).
    4.A answer:回答;ask:問;construct:構(gòu)造;build:建造。該句說“然后他們...關(guān)于他們對照片中的人的行為舉止是怎么期望的問題”顯然,應(yīng)該是他們應(yīng)該是回答問題而不是提問題。因此選answered是對的。
    5. A) likely(可能的, 可能) B) possible(可能的)
    C) probable(可能的) D) necessary(必需的, 必然的)
    Most(大多數(shù)的) participants(參與者) said(說) that those with more masculine(男子氣概的) features were __5__ to be risky(冒險的), competitive(競爭的), and more apt to (有...的傾向)fight(打架,戰(zhàn)斗), challenge(向...挑戰(zhàn)) bosses(老板), cheat on (對...不忠實)spouses(配偶) and put less(較少的) effort into (在...投入精力)parenting(撫養(yǎng)孩子).
    5.A likely:可能的;possible:可能的;probable:可能的;necessary:必然的。合適的選項是likely。其它的選項填入后生成的都是錯誤的句子。
be likely to do sth 可能...
    It is/was possible/probable to do sth.有可能會...
    6. A) bodies(身體) B) hands(手)
    C) arms(手臂, 武器) D) faces(臉,面對)
    Those with more feminine __ 6__ were seen as (被看作為...)good parents(父母) and husbands(丈夫), hard(努力的, 困難的, 硬的, 努力地) workers(工人) and emotionally(在情緒上) supportive(支持的) mates.
    6.D body:軀體;hand:手;arm:手臂;face:臉。由于調(diào)查對象看的是男士的頭部,因此選face是對的。
    7. A) seeming(看起來) B) appearing(看起來)
    C) looking(看起來, 看, 有...樣子的) D) pretending(假裝)
    But, despite(盡管) all the negative(消極的, 否定的) characteristics(特征), when asked(被問) who they would choose(選擇) for a short-term(短期的) relationship(關(guān)系), women selected(選擇) the more masculine __7__ men.
    7.C seem:好像;appear:出現(xiàn);look:看上去;pretend:假裝。我們可以說:These men look very masculine.這些男人看上去非常男性。也可以說these masculine looking men。因此用looking是對的。
    8. A) fast(很快地,緊緊地,快速的, 齋戒) B) brief (短暫的, 摘要)
    C) quick(快的, 迅速的, a quick learner/學(xué)得很快)
    D) swift(迅速的, 迅速地)
    Brad and George, both chiseled(輪廓分明的) jaws(下巴) and well-defined(輪廓分明的) brows(眉毛), then would be good for (適合...)a __8__ romance(浪漫) , not for something longer(更長久的).
    8.B fast:快;brief:短暫;quick:快;swirl:快。這里有三個表示“快”的英文詞,肯定不是合適的選項。另外,緊隨起后的短語是重復(fù),其中有l(wèi)onger(更長一點)這個詞,這就提醒我們應(yīng)該用brief這個詞。
The study(研究,學(xué)習(xí)) was published (被發(fā)表)in the December issue(期,問題,流出, 出版) of the US journal(雜志) Personal Relationships(人際關(guān)系).

Kruger said that from an evolutionary(進化的) perspective(觀點, 看法, 遠(yuǎn)景), this __9__ sense.
    9.A make:制造;cause:使得;do:做, 制作;form:形成。make senses是“說得通”的意思,是固定搭配結(jié)構(gòu)。
    10. A) of B) at C) for D) in
    The key(關(guān)鍵,鑰匙, 答案) is testosterone(睪丸激素), the hormone(荷爾蒙) responsible __10__ the development of masculine(男性的) facial(面部的) features(特征) and other sexual characteristics(性別特征).

    11.D normal:正常的;ordinary:普通的;weak:弱:strong:強。and是個并立詞。注意and引導(dǎo)的并列結(jié)構(gòu)要求所銜接的詞、詞組或句子在語義上能匹配 – 語法結(jié)構(gòu)一致, 意義色彩一致。可以看出“strong and healthy”是匹配的,但是“weak and healthy”就不匹配。
    12. A) cheat(欺騙, 騙子) B) cheats C) cheated D) cheating However(然而), increased(被增加的) testosterone(睪丸激素) has also been linked to(與...有聯(lián)系,被連接到...) __12__ and violence(暴力) in relationships(關(guān)系).
    12.D 這是同一個詞表現(xiàn)出的不同形態(tài)變化。link后面的to是介詞to而不是不定式符號 to,因此須用cheating(欺騙)。
    13. A) must(必需) B) might(可能)
    C) have to(不得不) D) should(應(yīng)該)
    So(因此, 如此),these men __13__ produce(產(chǎn)生) high quality (優(yōu)質(zhì)的) offspring(后代, 子孫),but they don’t always make(成為) great(好的, 偉大的, 大的) parents or faithful(忠實的) mates(配偶),Kruger says.
    13.B must:必須;might:可能have to:必須:should:應(yīng)該。女人根據(jù)男人的特征選擇伴侶這只是一個因素,因此下結(jié)論應(yīng)該留有余地,用might是比較合適的。
    14. A) shown(顯示,出示, 展覽) B) told(告訴)
    C) stated(陳述, 聲明) D) said(說)
The scientific community (科學(xué)界)have __14__ skepticism toward(對...懷疑) physiognomy(觀相術(shù)), which links facial characteristics to (把...和...聯(lián)系起來)certain(某個的,確定的, 必然的) behavioral(行為的) traits.
    14.A show:顯示;tell:告訴;state:陳述;say:說。除shown之外,told、stated或said填入后生成的句子或者語法錯誤, 或者表意不通順。

    15.B spouse:配偶;fan:狂熱仰慕者;partner:配偶;mate:伴侶。我們的世界知識告訴我們,任何人都不可能有數(shù)百萬的配偶,所以只有fans是合適的選擇。
