十一長假,想必約會(huì)不少吧。在我們漢語中,和戀人的約會(huì)與和普通人的約會(huì)都叫做“約會(huì)”;但是在英語中,這兩種約會(huì)有不同的表達(dá),和戀人的約會(huì)叫做date,和其他人的約會(huì)叫做 appointment.今天我們就來學(xué)學(xué)“爽約”怎么說。
大家都知道,stand up是站起來的意思,但如果加上一個(gè)someone,含義就變成了“爽約”:
A: I'm sorry for being late. The bus was stuck in a traffic jam for half an hour.
不好意思我遲到了,公車堵了半小時(shí)。
B: Well, I was afraid you would stand me up.
我都擔(dān)心你會(huì)放我鴿子呢。
如果一個(gè)人老是放別人鴿子那肯定是很討人厭的了。
要表示“失約”,還有另外一個(gè)說法,就是 break an appointment,不過這是表示“失約date”以外的約會(huì),例如:
You'd better not break your appointment with the lawyer.
