    大約兩個(gè)月未光顧理發(fā)店,腦后的頭發(fā)便掃過了衣領(lǐng)。我“蓄留”長發(fā)絕對(duì)不是想去趕時(shí)髦。自從業(yè)余自修法文以來,我確實(shí)沒有閑暇和心思修整邊幅。
    但是,愛美之心,人皆有之。何況我是一個(gè)正當(dāng)青春年華的小伙子。今天我下狠心擠了半天時(shí)間,到公園來觀賞菊展,還打算回去時(shí)順便去理理發(fā)。
    步出菊展會(huì),渾身上下似乎還散發(fā)著醉人的馨香,心曠神怡,竟想覓一處幽靜之處小憩,回味一番這美的享受。于是,我沿著卵石鋪就的曲徑緩步而行。
    綠蔭掩映的地方,一張長椅空著。剛坐下,褲管下端被長椅上一顆小釘掛了一個(gè)直角破口。我并不十分惋惜,這是我第一條,也是最后一條喇叭褲。就在我埋頭檢查破口時(shí),卻在長椅下邊拾到一本書。
    這是一本精裝書。封面上有一排赫然醒目的燙金法文,是有關(guān)教育的論著。不知是誰不小心丟失的。逛公園都手不釋卷,難得!光這種精神就使我感到臉紅,肅然起敬。盡管我對(duì)教育學(xué)沒有一點(diǎn)知識(shí),但因?qū)W了點(diǎn)法文,便忍不住隨手翻閱,想檢驗(yàn)一下自己的學(xué)習(xí)成果。
    有腳步聲。一對(duì)男女青年朝我這兒走來。像是在尋找什么東西。
    “請(qǐng)問,您在這兒見過一本書嗎?”男青年盯了一眼攤在我腿上的書,很有禮貌地問。
    我微笑地打量著他:五官端正,皮膚白皙,樸實(shí)的學(xué)生頭,鼻梁上架了一副可以把任何人都襯托得幾分斯文的玳瑁眼鏡,一套洗得稍稍泛白的中山裝,緊系著風(fēng)紀(jì)扣。
    “是本外文書嗎?”我和藹地問。
    “對(duì)!對(duì)!是本精裝的德文書?!蹦星嗄晟磉吥俏粷M臉稚氣的姑娘搶著回答,還飛快地把目光在我和她戀人身上輪番掃瞄。顯然,她在比較中更為自己有這么一位博學(xué)的朋友感到榮耀。“德文書?!”我驚愕不已,疑心是否聽錯(cuò)?!皩?duì),是德文書?!蹦星嗄晟袂槭宙?zhèn)定,還補(bǔ)充說:“是關(guān)于文學(xué)方面的,不知你對(duì)外文…… ”他的目光透過平光鏡片,已有幾分鄙夷不屑了。
    “是這本書嗎?”我猛地合上攤在腿上的書,遞到男青年面前。
    “就是,就是這本書!”又是那位稚氣的姑娘,她歡欣得幾乎要雀躍起來。
    “謝謝……”男青年伸出了手。
    我的手反倒縮回了:
    “你弄錯(cuò)了,這是一本法文書,內(nèi)容是關(guān)于教育學(xué)的。你,拿去吧!”
    幾分惶恐在男青年臉上掠過,他迅速地從我手上抓過精裝書,對(duì)正在十分驚訝和納悶的姑娘說:
    “我們走……跟這種人有什么糾纏頭……”
    “他,他說是法文……”姑娘想弄明白,但畢竟還是挪動(dòng)了腳步。
    “哼,他懂什么外文,你沒見他那副打扮,長頭發(fā),喇叭褲,看了就讓人惡心!”男青年拽著姑娘的胳膊,邊說邊走。
    姑娘不住地點(diǎn)著頭。
    望著他們漸漸遠(yuǎn)去的身影,我突然產(chǎn)生了一種深深的憐憫。

    Books and Appearance

    I found half of the day to visit a flower show and had my long hair cut. Coming out of the show, I walked along until I came to a park bench. I sat down to allow myself some leisure for the first time since I started learning French two months before.
    Then a book lying in the grass nearby caught my eye. I picked it up. It was a French book in excellent binding①。 As I turned the pages quickly, a young couple came up to ask if I had seen a book in German. Wrongly understanding my expression on my face, the young man, who seemed well-educated, added that it was a book in literature.
    I held out the book and explained it was a French book on education. The man was so troubled by what I said that he took it away from my hand in a hurry.
    As they turned to go away, I heard the man speaking: “What do you expect? A guy② with long hair and in bell-bottom trousers③ can't tell German from French.”
    The girl nodded in agreement, but I was wondering if she would ever find out what was going on. (197 words)
