A letter to the Manager of a Supermarket
Dear Sir / Madam,
I am writing to complain about the desk lamp I bought rom the electric appliance department of your supermarket three days ago.
The lamp looked under good condition upon purchase. Unfortunately, I was astonished to find it incapable of working when I went back home. So I took the lamp to the center of refund and replacement of your supermarket requesting a solution. Quite to my surprise, the receptionist lady was so impertinent that she refused to listen to my explanation and simply concluded that it was my fault. Realizing the impossibility to communicate with her, I figure out that the best way is to write to you directly.
As the lamp is under warranty, I am requesting an urgent replacement and would appreciate your arranging this as soon as possible. Besides, I strongly suggest that you attach great importance to the quality of your supermarket’s service. I believe that it is against your original intention to lose a once loyal customer owing to this issue.
Sincerely,
Li Ming

On Being Down-to-earth
In the picture, we see clearly a young man is lying in the chair lazily and saying to himself, “Tomorrow, tomorrow I will begin my grand scheme.” He may dream of being a successful writer, doctor, lawyer, or athlete, but he can never realize his dream if he goes on daydreaming like this without taking immediate action.
This picture tries to warn us against such empty dreams. Some people have great dreams and even ambitious plans, but when it comes to the actual beginning, they find every excuse to put them off. Two reasons can account for this phenomenon. For one thing, such people are quite lazy. Dreaming takes little effort while beginning a grand mission needs both courage and determination. For another, the beginning is often the most difficult part. Well begun is half done—if we have a smooth and satisfactory beginning, the daydream is no longer a daydream but an attainable goal.
If we have a great aim, let’s begin working towards it now, because we should never put off what we could finish today until tomorrow.
