一、General Information Concerning Application

Freie Universität offers a wide range of study programs. Many of the programs toward the degree of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science offered at Freie Universität Berlin consist of a core subject and either two modules, with 30 credit points (Leistungspunkte, LP) required in each, or one module of 60 credit points (Combination Bachelor). Your application is not complete unless you have applied for both the core subject and the module(s); only then will your application be considered in the admission process.

If you earned your university entrance qualification in a country other than Germany, are already enrolled in a core subject at Freie Universität Berlin and would like to apply for one or more new module/s, please use the application with German HZB for university-internal procedure.
Some study programs require specific language skills, which have to be proven within enrollment at Freie Universität Berlin.

For Single-subject bachelor degree programs (Mono Bachelor) without restricted admission capacity (non-impacted programs) applicants should apply for enrollment to the Student Records and Registration Office without submitting an application for admission.
For combination bachelor programs without restricted admission capacity an application within the application period is required.

If you earned your university entrance qualification in a country other than Germany, you are required to submit your application to Freie Universität Berlin via uni-assist. Uni-assist reviews whether the application meets the formal and subject-specific prerequisites established by Freie Universität Berlin. Uni-assist is not responsible for carrying out selection procedures.

The preliminary examination by uni-assist is with costs. Your application to uni-assist will not be processed unless the fee is paid to the account of uni-assist. To accelerate the proceedings, please enclose a deposit receipt or transfer voucher as proof of payment in the application.

Please note:
In general, the processing of an application takes about four to six weeks, towards the end of the application period it takes even longer. Therefore, we recommend to submit your application as soon as possible before the deadline. Otherwise you cannot be informed about missing documents by uni-assist in time. Handed in documents after the deadline cannot be taken into consideration.
You can use the confirmation letter by uni-assist to apply for a study visa at the German embassy in your home country.

Some undergraduate study programs require certain language skills, which have to be proven either within the application procedure or within the enrollment at Freie Universität Berlin.

There are specific additional requirements for admission to some undergraduate programs. These requirements generally involve specific language skills, which students are required to demonstrate as part of the process of admission or enrollment to Freie Universität Berlin.

1. Language proof for application procedure
Application for the first semester

For some programs, students have to pass a mandatory language test. The requirements for the following programs are met only if the language test is passed or in case of exemption from the test (core subject and/or module):
English Philology, French Philology, Spanish Philology, Italian Philology, French Studies, Italian Studies, and North American Studies

Applicants for the first semester inform themselves (before application deadline) on the websites of the Language Center of Freie Universität Berlin about:

The Language Center of Freie Universität Berlin is responsible for granting exemptions from language tests. On the websites of the Language Center (Sprachenzentrum) (see “Sprachtests” (only in German)) information is available, which qualifications are recognized as equivalent to the required.

Applicants for the first semester of a program who do not meet the language requirements (Test nicht bestanden oder nicht teilgenommen, keine Befreiung vom Test) will not be considered in the admission process.

Application for higher semesters
Applicants for higher semesters of one of the above-mentioned study programs have to pass a language test. In case the admission requirements are not met, the admission notice becomes void. Enrollment for the chosen study program is not possible.

Some study programs require a certain level of English skills. The language level shown on the (school) certificate is generally binding. The Department of Application and Admission will accept the following proofs as equivalents:

If you have earned your university entrance qualification abroad, the transcripts and documents you submit with your application do not typically show how many years of language instruction you have completed. In that case, applicants must submit either a certificate from their school regarding the duration of their instruction, or a language certificate. For graduates of the preparatory course (Studienkolleg) at Freie Universität Berlin, the certificate shows the level at which the language instruction was given.

In the case of university entrance qualifications issued in Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, or the United States of America, or if you have a degree from any of those countries, you are not required to provide any further proof regarding your English skills on the levels B1 CEFR or B2 CEFR.

Applicants with a native language other than German and who have earned the university entrance qualification abroad, are required to demonstrate German language skills in accordance with the German higher education entrance examination (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerberinnen und -bewerber, DSH ) at Freie Universität Berlin. You can also provide proof of these language skills by means of equivalents to the DSH.

All of the stated time limits are exclusion periods specified by law. For all applications for which an application for admission and supporting documents are to be submitted, the full application documents must be received in the required form at the relevant location (higher education institution, uni-assist, or Hochschulstart) by 11:59 p.m. on the due date. The date and time stamped on the documents when received by the recipient is the operative factor, not the postmark date. Faxes and E-mails are not accepted.

2.Application deadlines for study programs with nationwide limitations on admissions ("Hochschulstart"):
These time limits apply only to applications for the first subject-specific semester by applicants from an EU Member State, International students with German university entrance qualifications - regardless of nationality (Bildungsinländer) and citizens of countries that are signatories to the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA), but are not members of the European Union; these are Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
