    1.The Greenwood Boys are a group of pop singers. “綠林少年”是一個(gè)流行歌曲演唱團(tuán)。
    (1)group的含義是“組”、“群”、“群體”、“團(tuán)體”。通常用 a group of表示一群或一個(gè)團(tuán)體:
    On my way home, I met a group of students.
    我在回家的路上遇見了一群學(xué)生。
    You can see a group of islands in the middle of the lake.
    你可以看到湖的中央有一群島嶼。
    (2)pop是popular的縮寫形式,主要用于口語,意為“通俗的”、“流行的”、“大眾的”:
    Do you like pop songs/ music?
    你喜歡流行歌曲/音樂嗎?
    2.At present, they are visiting all parts of the country. 目前他們正在全國各地巡回演出。
    (1)時(shí)間狀語at present意義與now相同,意為“目前”、“現(xiàn)在”,是個(gè)固定短語:
    The doctor is very busy at present. Come here tomorrow morning.
    醫(yī)生現(xiàn)在非常忙。你明天上午來吧。
    (2)all在這里的意思是“各種的”、“各個(gè)”,與它通常的意思(“所有的”或“一切的”)稍有不同:
    You can find all kinds of shoes in this store.
    在這家商店你可以見到各種各樣的鞋。
    3.As usual, the police will have a difficult time. 同往常一樣,警察的日子將不好過。
    (1)usual的含義為“通常的”、“平常的”、“慣常的”,as usual是固定短語,可譯為“像平常一樣”、“照例”:
    On that day, he was late for work as usual.
    那天,他像平常一樣,上班又遲到了。
    (2)difficult 在這里可以解釋為“難對(duì)付的”、“費(fèi)勁的”,指麻煩比較多。
    4.They will be trying to keep order. 他們將設(shè)法維持秩序。
    order常用的意義是“次序”、“順序”。在這句話中它的含義是“治安”、“秩序”,一般用于 keep order(維持秩序),public order (治安)等短語中。
    5.It is always the same on these occasions. 每逢這種場合,情況都是這樣。
    當(dāng)用occasion表示在某個(gè)/些場合時(shí),它與介詞on連用:
    John has met Mary on three different occasions.
    約翰曾在3個(gè)不同的場合見過瑪麗。

    1.After I had left a small village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town. 在離開法國南部的一個(gè)小村莊后,我繼續(xù)駛往下一個(gè)城鎮(zhèn)。
    (1)表示一個(gè)大范圍中的某一個(gè)地方時(shí)要用介詞in:
    Beijing is in the north of China.
    北京位于中國的北部。
    (2)副詞on緊跟在動(dòng)詞后面時(shí)可以表示“向前”、“繼續(xù)下去”等意義:
    He talked on until everybody had gone.
    他滔滔不絕地講到大家都走了。
    I was reading when my friend called. After he had gone, I went on to read.
    我朋友來看我時(shí)我正在看書。他走了以后我便繼續(xù)看書。
    2.I stopped and he asked me for a lift. 我把車停下,他向我提出要求搭車。
    名詞lift的含義之一是“(給步行者)搭便車”、“免費(fèi)搭車”:
    Last night, I had to walk home. No one would give me a lift.
    昨晚我不得不走回家。誰也不愿意讓我搭車。
    I was lucky today. I got a lift soon after I had left the village.
    我今天運(yùn)氣好,離開村子不久就搭上了便車。
    3.As soon as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he replied in the same language. 他一上車,我就用法語向他問早上好,他也同樣用法語回答我。
    (1)表示時(shí)間的固定短語as soon as通常表示“一……就……”,即兩個(gè)動(dòng)詞之間相隔時(shí)間非常短:
    Tell him the news as soon as you meet him.
    你一遇見他就把這消息告訴他。
    (2)表示用某種語言作為交際手段時(shí)介詞用in,表示講某種語言時(shí)可以不加介詞:
    speak English/ French 講英語/法語
    That book is written in German.
    那本書是用德語寫的。
    He replied the question in English.
    他用英語回答了這個(gè)問題。

    1.The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth would see me. 秘書告訴我說哈姆斯沃斯先生要見我。
    would 在這里不是表示單純的過去將來時(shí),而是表示“想……”、“要……”的意思:
    What would you like to have?
    你想要吃(喝)什么?
    John wouldn't lend me his bicycle.
    約翰不愿意把他的自行車借給我。
    2.He did not look up from his desk when I entered. 我進(jìn)去的時(shí)候,他連頭也沒抬。
    在這句話的look up中,look是它的本義“看”、“瞧”。look up一般表示原先在埋頭干什么之后抬頭看:
    He looked up(from his book)when he heard a noise.
    他聽到聲音后就抬起了頭。(原先在讀書)
    3.I knew that my turn had come. 我知道這次該輪到我了。
    turn在這里是名詞,意為“輪流”、“輪班”、“(依次輪流時(shí)各自的)機(jī)會(huì)”:
    I have already asked two questions. Now it's your turn.
    我已經(jīng)問了兩個(gè)問題。該輪到你了。
    When his turn came, he couldn't speak any word.
    輪到他時(shí),他卻一個(gè)字也說不出來。
    4.‘Mr. Harmsworth,’I said in a weak voice.“哈姆斯沃斯先生,”我無力地說。
    weak在這里不是指身體虛弱,而是指聲音“微弱”、“無力”,因?yàn)榕卤婚_除而感到緊張。
    5.Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra thousand pounds a year!
    然后他微笑了一下告訴我說,我每年將得到1,000英鎊的額外收入。
    (1)extra 表示“額外的”、“外加的”、“份外的”:
    On Sundays, I usually get some extra sleep.
    星期天我通常要多睡一會(huì)兒。
    Last month, he was paid an extra hundred pounds.
    他上個(gè)月多得了100英鎊。
    (2)a在這里可譯為“每一”:
    I went to London once a month.
    我每月去倫敦。
    Jack telephoned Pauline four times a day.
