Salesgirl:Would you like to see our new shirts?
Steve:Sorry, I’m not really that interested in those things.
Salesgirl:They are very nice, you know.
Steve:Really?
Salesgirl:And not expensive eitherŒ.
Steve:Oh, I don’t care about that.
Salesgirl:Everybody’s buying them.
Steve:Are they?
Salesgirl:Yes, they are very fashionable, you see.
Steve:I’m afraid I’m not interested in fashion. There are so many other really important things in the world. Fashion seems so truly…unimportant.
Salesgirl:I see. But looking professional is important. If you don’t look good, people will think you are not a good or smart person and they might not trust you either.
Steve:But thank you very much all the sameŽ.
Salesgirl:Sorry. I couldn’t help you.

女店員:很多人都在買。
史蒂夫:是嗎?
女店員:是的,您看,它們很時尚的。
史蒂夫:恐怕我對時尚可不感興趣。世界上有很多真正重要的事情。時尚其實真的…不重要。

Glyn:Morning, Ellie.
Ellie:Hi, Glyn. Do you know who’s just got marriedŒ? Old MacDonald.
Glyn:You’re joking. I can hardly believe my ears. He’s over eighty! Who’s the lovely bride?
Ellie:He’s nearly ninety. He met a woman at a church dance and I guess it was love at first sight for both of them. I guess they are both quite active at their church, so it was easy to meet and spend time together.
Glyn:Wow! Close toŽ ninety? Are you sure? What about her?
Ellie:I’m positive. I just saw them and asked how they were doing. She is eighty-four and on her sixth marriage.
Glyn:Is she really?
Ellie:Yes, she is. And guess what? She has 34 grandchildren and almost 50 great-grandchildren.
Glyn:Really? Quite a woman, isn’t she?

Teacher:What’s your excuse this time?
Tom:Have I used the one that my sister is sick?
Teacher:Yes, twice last week.
Tom:Are you sure? I thought I said it was my mother.
Teacher:I don’t think so. But it could’ve been.
Tom:Well. You can trust me this time. My sister is definitely sick. I’m just coming from the hospital. They say she might even die.
Teacher:I don’t buyŽ your story. Try not to have any more sick relatives this week, all right?
Tom:I’ll do my best.
Teacher:Just try to be a little more punctual in the future.
Tom:I’m working on it. Really!
