Betrothal Gifts
There are always news about how many betrothal gifts a man has to prepare to get a bride in China. In fact, this is not only happened in China, many less developed countries also have the same problem. Though the marriage is about two families but only two people in love, but I can't agree that the groom have to paid overload to the bride's family to get marry. The betrothal gifts in the old time of China were given to the parents in law by the groom to thank them for having been taking care the bride, and after being marry, the bride would have very few chances to come back to see them. So the betrothal gift was also called “bride price”. But this is not suitable for today’s situation. The young couple will always visit the parents and support them, it is unfair for the man to pay much money to the parents in law anymore. On the other hand, the bride’s parents requirement too much bride price would rise the conflict between two families and then hurt feelings of the young couple. The marriage would come to a crisis. Two people get marry should be based on love, not doing business. They have their own life to go on, the parents should give them the best blessings, not obstacles. The sound betrothal gifts and enough love, the marriage will have a wonderful start.
Raising the Retirement Age
Recently, there is a controversial policy published by Chinese government says that will raise the retirement age gradually to 65, which is 5 and 10 years longer than the current ages for men and women. This news is being the hot topic on internet. Why would this happen? Most people assumed that it is because of the aging problem. Since last 80’s, the population and family planning had been carried out, all family was allowed to have one child to have the population of China controlled. It did work for 2 decades, but as the first “only children” have been growing up, their parents growing old, and the aging problem is becoming increasingly evident. There is not enough people of young generation support the old, therefore, the problem of burden of the social insurance and the medical insurance is getting worse. So this raising the retirement age is needed in this situation. However, this may not be the best answer to the problem. Raising the retirement age will require the old people would be still doing their job, the young generation would be jobless since they were occupied by those aged, and it will certainly increase many other social problems. Anyway, I think the government should have other plans to prevent the problem getting worse. Such as encourage people to buy commercial insurance, promote the medical reform, not just raise the retirement age.
The Influence of The Social Network Service
As been popular in young people’s daily life, the social network service have influenced not only the ways we are socializing but also the culture and the tradition of the country. Take the spring festival as an example, traditionally, in the evening of the Chinese New Year eve, the whole family usually would have a reunion meal. Many of the family members are not really be at home quite often spending time with others especially with their old parents, so this reunion meal is very important for every family to have a chance to talk, enjoy the together time. But today all has changed. The most common look of the reunion meal now is that all young people eat quietly meanwhile the eyes are staring at their cell phone, checking out their “Friend Circle” to see if anyone update the status. They only make sounds when someone grab a red envelop with very lousy money in it. The old parents feel awkward when facing this weird situation, no one would even like to talk to them, the reunion meal turns out that there is just a bunch of strange people eating at the same table. And the TV shows are pushing this more far ahead. They will set some interactive sessions to encourage people use the social network service on their cell phone to get some bonus. So even TV time people still stick to their cell phone and have no word for others sitting around. Seems like the social network service is completely replace the normal communication offline. That will obviously ruin the relationship with family. I wouldn’t say the social network service is all bad, but somehow, I prefer to communicate face to face with someone I really care.
