在運動比賽中常用嗚槍作為“開始起跑”的信號，所以jump the gun這個片語指的是“在正式嗚槍之前就先偷跑”。在日常生活當中老美常用jump the gun來指“太早行動”，也就是start too early的意思。
比方說人家明明規(guī)定是15號發(fā)薪水，但是你硬要14號去問人家支票下來了沒，旁人就可以規(guī)勸他："Don't jump the gun because they usually start distributing paychecks on the 15th. (不要太早去，因為他們通常十五號才開始發(fā)薪水。)”當然遜一點的*也可以用"Don't go too early."來代替這個"Don't jump the gun."
我的老美朋友還告訴我，jump the gun還常用來指一個人在不明就理的情況下亂發(fā)脾氣 (get mad at someone too early，也是有too early 的意思在里面) ，例如今天有人上門來要債，一進門不分清紅皂白就先把我罵一頓，但他連我是不是債主都不知道，這時就可以說："Hey!Don't jump the gun. What's up?"(喂，不要太早生氣，到底發(fā)生了什么事？)” 或是上次我室友開車被警察攔下來，他自認沒做錯什么，劈頭就和警察伯伯理論了起來，結(jié)果警察告訴他：
"Don't jump the gun. I just want to remind you to close the gas tank cap." (不要太快生氣，我只是想提醒你油箱蓋忘了關上了。)
