On May 23, US President Barack Obama announced the United States is lifting a decades-long arms embargo on Vietnam during his visit to the country. Obama also made it clear that the US may sell weapons to Vietnam on a case-by-case basis. The US first imposed an arms embargo on northern Vietnam in 1964 during the Vietnam War.
