Tsinghua University is a research university located in Beijing, China, established in 1911. With strong research and training, Tsinghua University is consistently ranked as one of the top academic institutions in China, alongside Peking University. It is one of the nine members in the C9 League of universities.

In the aftermath of the Boxer Rebellion, American Secretary of State John Hay suggested that the US $30 million plus Boxer indemnity paid by China to the United States was excessive. After much negotiation with ambassador Liang Cheng, President Theodore Roosevelt obtained congressional approval in 1909 to reduce the Qing dynasty indemnity payment by US$10.8 million, on the condition that these funds would be used as scholarships for Chinese students to study in the United States.
義和團運動之后，美國國務(wù)卿約翰·海表示，中國賠償給美國的3000萬美元和義和團賠款原屬過多。在與清朝駐美公使梁誠多番交涉后，西奧多·羅斯?？偨y(tǒng)于1909年獲國會批準(zhǔn)減少清朝1080萬美元的賠款，前提是這些資金作為中國學(xué)生留美的獎學(xué)金。
Using this fund, the Tsinghua College was established in Beijing, on 29 April 1911 on the site of a former royal garden, to serve as a preparatory school for students to be sent by the government to study in the United States. The faculty members for sciences were recruited by the YMCA from the United States and its graduates transferred directly to American schools upon graduation. In 1925, the school established its College Department and started its research institute on Chinese studies.
利用這筆資金，清華學(xué)堂于1911年4月29日在北京一個前身為皇家園林的位置成立，作為公派赴美留學(xué)生的預(yù)備學(xué)校。科學(xué)教職工由基督教青年會從美國選拔，畢業(yè)生畢業(yè)后可直接就讀美國大學(xué)。1925年，設(shè)立大學(xué)部，開辦國學(xué)研究院。
In 1928, Tsinghua changed its name to National Tsing Hua University (NTHU). During World War II in 1937, Tsinghua University along with Peking University and Nankai University, merged to form Changsha Temporary University in Changsha, and later National Southwestern Associated University in Kunming of Yunnan province. After the war, Tsinghua moved back to Beijing and resumed its operations.
1928年，清華易名國立清華大學(xué)(NTHU)。1937年第二次世界大戰(zhàn)期間，清華大學(xué)、北京大學(xué)和南開大學(xué)在長沙組建長沙臨時大學(xué)，而后在云南省昆明更名為西南聯(lián)合大學(xué)。戰(zhàn)后，清華大學(xué)遷回北京，重新辦學(xué)
