Ⅰ.都有“是否”之意。在某種情況下右互換。如：
① I don’t know if / whether he’ll come tomorrow. 我不知道明天他是否來(lái)。
Ⅱ. 但在下列6種情況下if 不能替換whether:
1. 正式文體中，句中有or not時(shí)。如：
I wonder whether it is big enough or not. 我不知道它是否夠大。
2.引導(dǎo)主語(yǔ)、表語(yǔ)、同位語(yǔ)從句時(shí)。如：
Whether it is true(or not) is still a question. 它是不是真的還是一個(gè)問(wèn)題。
3. 作介詞賓語(yǔ)時(shí)，如：
I haven’t decided the quwstion of whether I’ll go back home. 我還未決定是否要回家去。
4. 放在不定式前，與不定式組成詞組。如：
Li Lei hasn’t decided whether to go or not. 李雷還未決定去還是不去。
5. 作discuss等詞的賓語(yǔ)時(shí)，如：
They discuss whether they should close the shop. 他們講座是否該關(guān)閉那家商店。
6. 引導(dǎo)的從句放在句首時(shí)。如：
Whether this is true or not, I cannot say.這件事是否真實(shí)我說(shuō)不上。
Ⅲ. if 還有連詞的功能，意為“如果”引導(dǎo)條件狀語(yǔ)從句;而whether另有“不管，無(wú)論”之意，引導(dǎo)讓步狀語(yǔ)從句。如：
① I will be happy if you call me. 如果你打電話給我，我將很高興。
② Whether you like it or not, you’ll have to do it. 不管你喜歡不喜歡，你必須做這件事。
