catch on 流行起來；理解
例句：At first，many people didn't like that kind of music，but after a while it caught on．
一開始很多人不喜歡那種音樂，但一段時間過去之后，這種音樂流行開來。
2.for hours 好幾個小時，好長時間（在表示時間的名詞后面加上s，前面不需要many就可以表達很多的意思，再如：for days, for weeks, for months, for years, for ages）
例句：This film seems to have been on for hours, but it started only forty-five minutes ago。
這部電影好像已經(jīng)放映了幾個小時了，可是它只不過是45分鐘前才開演的。
3.give up 放棄，不再做了(abandon, quit)
例句：1.Mary usded to enter all the races，but now she's given up running.
以前瑪麗會參加每一場賽跑的，但是現(xiàn)在她已不再跑了。
2.He attempted the experiment several times, but he gave up after three hours in the laboratory.
他這個實驗試著做了好幾次，但在實驗室花了三個小時之后，他放棄了。
3.instead of instead of 沒有…，而不是…(rather than)
例句：1.His method included looking at distant objects by moving the eyes from side to side instead of staring at them.
他的方法包括看遠處的物體，眼球要左右運動而不是盯著它們。
2.Instead of going to the library，he went dancing．
他去跳舞了，沒去圖書館。
4.spend vt. 度過，花費
spend hours on end 連續(xù)花很長時間
A:Did Linda ever finish that introductory chapter?
A:琳達到底有沒有完成前言？
B:I'm not sure. She's spent hours on end rewriting it.
B:我不敢肯定。她已經(jīng)一連幾個小時地改寫它呢。
5.waste adj. 廢棄的 v. 浪費，消耗 n. 1．廢物2．浪費
a waste of money 錢的浪費，浪費錢（對照a waste of time 記憶）
例句：I really felt the movie was a waste of money. didn't you?
