Lesson 64 The Channel Tunnel
First listen and then answer the question.
Why was the first tunnel not completed?
In 1858, a French engineer, Aimé Thomé de Gamond, arrived in England with a plan for a twenty-one-mile tunnel under the English Channel. He said that it would be possible to build a platform in the centre of the Channel. This platform would serve as a port and a 5 railway station. The tunnel would be well-ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea level. In 1860, a better plan was put forward by an Englishman, William Low. He suggested that a double railway tunnel should be built. This would solve the problem of ventilation, for if a train entered this tunnel, it would draw in fresh air behind it. Forty-two years later a tunnel was actually 10 begun. If,at the time, the British had not feared invasion, it would have been completed. The world had to wait almost another 100 years for the Channel Tunnel. It was officially opened on March 7,1994,finally connecting Britain to the European continent.

Notes on the text
1 a plan for a twenty-one-mile tunnel under the English Channel, 建造一條長(zhǎng)21英里、穿越英吉利海峽的隧道計(jì)劃, for a…
2 serve as…,用作……,充當(dāng)……,與 serve for同義。
3 a better plan was put forward,
4 He suggested that a double railway-tunnel should be built. 在英文中,動(dòng)詞 suggest,demand, recommend等后面所接的 that賓語(yǔ)從句中,謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞要用should+動(dòng)詞原形,而should又常常省略,這是一種虛擬語(yǔ)氣的結(jié)構(gòu)。
5 If, at the time, the British had not feared invasion, it would have been completed. 因此,在條件句中要用過(guò)去完成時(shí) had not feared,而主句中則要用 would+ have+ 過(guò)去分詞。
