Are there many parks or public gardens where you live (or, in your hometown)?
The town I grew up in has many lush, green parks, both in the centre of the city and further out among residential areas. Much of my childhood was spent in various parks around the city, and I gave them all special names – the Bash Park and Super Girl Park were always my two favourites.
Do you often (or, ever) go to a park or a (public) garden?
Now I rarely go to the park because I do not have very much free time, but whenever I have a friend visiting me during their vacation, I make sure to take them to my favourite parks around Beijing, which include many of the famous historical sites popular among tourists.
What do other people do in parks or gardens?
I often notice many large groups of people dancing or exercising during the rare moments I visit or simply walk past parks and gardens. Open spaces on campuses and near apartment blocks are used in similar ways; hordes of people gather and follow aerobics classes or perform traditional dances. Depending on the time of day, spontaneous T’ai Chi classes can also be seen occurring in China’s parks and gardens.
What do you like to do when you go to a park or a public garden?
Whenever I go to a park nowadays, I aim to go on a nice, sunny day when it is not raining outside. I spend several hours preparing to go, by making a picnic of breads, meats, dips and fruits. Sometimes I take a flask of hot tea or coffee if it is a cold day. Then I sit outdoors with my friends, while chatting and enjoying the beautiful view.
What do you think are the functions of parks and public gardens?
I think parks are extremely functional as public spaces, which are very necessary for an active, sociable society. China’s parks enable groups of people to meet, exercise, socialize and conduct other group activities. A prosperous people are a social people – without parks and free, open public spaces in which to gather, I believe the Chinese people would not be nearly so sociable, happy and successful.
