Last week at a dinner-party, the hostess asked me to sit next to Mrs Rumbold. Mrs Rumbold was a large, unsmiling lady in a tight black dress. She did not even look up when I took my seat beside her. Her eyes were fixed on her plate and in a short time, she was busy eating. I tried to make conversation. 'A new play is coming to" The Globe" soon,' I said. "Will you be seeing it ?"'No,'she answered. 'Will you be spending your holidays abroad this year?' I asked. 'No,' she answered. 'Will you be staying in England?' I asked. 'No,' she answered. In despair, I asked her whether she was enjoying her dinner. 'Young man,' she answered,'if you ate more and talked less, we would both enjoy your dinner !'

一句話總結(jié)：虛擬語氣只用于非真實(shí)條件句中，表達(dá)假設(shè)的或?qū)崿F(xiàn)可能性不大的情況，通常表達(dá)的只是一種愿望、假設(shè)、懷疑或是推測。
條件從句時(shí)態(tài)→ 主句時(shí)態(tài)
與現(xiàn)在事實(shí)相反：一般過去時(shí)→ should / would / could / might + 動詞原形
與將來事實(shí)相反：should.動詞原形→ should / would / could / might + 動詞原形
與過去事實(shí)相反：過去完成時(shí)→ should / would / could / might + have + 過去分詞
