    Lesson 22Knowledge and progress知識(shí)和進(jìn)步
First listen and then answer the following question.
In what two areas have people made no 'progress' at all?
Why does the idea of progress loom so large in the modern world? Surely because progress of a particular kind is actually taking place around us and is becoming more and more manifest. Although mankind has undergone no general improvement in intelligence or morality, it has made extraordinary progress in the accumulation of knowledge. Knowledge began to increase as soon as the thoughts of one individual could be communicated to another by means of speech. With the invention of writing, a great advance was made, for knowledge could then be not only communicated but also stored. Libraries made education possible, and education in its turn added to libraries: the growth of knowledge followed a kind of compound interest law, which was greatly enhanced by the invention of printing. All this was comparatively slow until, with the coming of science, the tempo was suddenly raised. Then knowledge began to be accumulated according to a systematic plan. The trickle became a stream; the stream has now become a torrent. Moreover, as soon as new knowledge is acquired, it is now turned to practical account. What is called 'modern civilization' is not the result of a balanced development of all man's nature. but of accumulated knowledge applied to practical life. The problem now facing humanity is: What is going to be done with all this knowledge? As is so often pointed out, knowledge is a two-edged weapon which can be used equally for good or evil. It is now being used indifferently for both. Could any spectacle, for instance, be more grimly whimsical than that of gunners using science to shatter men's bodies while closed hand surgent used to restore them.We have to ask ourselves very seriously what will happen if this two-fold use of knowledge, with its ever-increasing power, continues.【參考譯文】
A huge shape loomed up out of the fog.

    講解:make progress前進(jìn),進(jìn)步
We have made pleasing progress in our talks.
Although he is very old, (yet) he is quite strong.
誤:Although he is very old, but he is quite strong.
But Ididn’t know that then, although I learned it later.
3.Knowledge began to increase as soon as the thoughts of one individual could be communicated to another by means of speech.
    講解:as soon as見(jiàn)語(yǔ)法部分。
4.Libraries made education possible, and education in its turn added to libraries.

5.What is called 'modern civilization' is not the result of a balanced development of all man's nature. but of accumulated knowledge applied to practical life.
    講解:What is called主語(yǔ)從句。
    not...but...
My bag is not black but red.
The letter is addressed not to me but to you.
He failed not because he isn't clever but because he didn't work hard. as soon as,
    hardly…when…
    no sooner…than…
As soon as I got to the bus stop, the bus started.
Hardly had I got to the bus stop when the bus started.
No sooner had I got to the bus stop than the bus started.
    但他們之間也有一些差異,例如,如果從兩件事情的間隔時(shí)間來(lái)說(shuō),as soon as 較長(zhǎng),no sooner...than
    1、as soon as
I’ll write you as soon as I get there.
As soon as I went in, Katherine cried out with pleasure.
I’ll return the book as soon as I have read it.
Andrew left as soon as he had drunk his coffee.
    2、no sooner…than
He had no sooner returned than he bought a house.
No sooner had he arrived than he went away again.
No sooner had the game started than it began to rain heavily.
    3、hardly…when...
    它的意思是“幾乎未來(lái)得及做完A這件事,緊接著就開(kāi)始B這件事?!?BR>    使用這個(gè)短語(yǔ)時(shí),一般用于過(guò)去完成時(shí);并且when有時(shí)可改用before。例如:
He had hardly finished the article when the light went out.
He had hardly had time to settle down when he sold the house.
Hardly had I finished eating when he came in.
Hardly had she gone out when a student came to visit her.
1.Surely progress of a particular kind is actually taking place around us and is becoming more and more manifest.
2.Although mankind has undergone no general improvement in intelligence or morality,it has made extraordinary progress in the accumulation of knowledge.
    3. All this was comparatively slow until, with the coming of science, the tempo was suddenly raised.
4.As is so often pointed out, knowledge is a two-edged weapon which can be used equally for good or evil.
