一、the+adj.表示一類人
有的形容詞前加上the可表示一類人，如the living (活著的人), the dead(死了的人), the young (年青人), the old (老年人), the poor (窮人), the rich (富人), the wounded(傷員), the sick (病人), the blind(盲人)等，作主語時，謂語動詞要用復數(shù)。如：
The poor starve and the rich feast.窮人挨餓,富人吃喝。
二、the+adj.表示某國人
在以-sh或-ch結(jié)尾的表示民族的形容詞前加the可表示指這個民族的整體，如the British (英國人), the English (英格蘭人), the Irish (愛爾蘭人), the Spanish (西班牙), the Welsh (威爾士), the French (法國人), the Dutch (荷蘭人)等等，作主語時，謂語動詞也要用復數(shù)。如：
The English have a wonderful sense of humour. 英國人有很強的幽默感。
三、the+adj.表示一類事
常見的表示一類事物的有the latest (最新消息), the best (的事), the new (新生事物), the old (舊事物), the unreal (不真實的事), the unknown (未知事物), the unexpected(出乎意料的事), the exciting (令人興奮的事), the lovely (美好的事物)等，作主語時，謂語動詞用單數(shù)。如：
The best (thing) is yet to come. 好事就要來臨。
