Towards the end of the Spring and Autumn period, King Fuchai of Wu, having defeated the state of Yue, hoped to expand his land by invading the State of Qi. But he was so busy celebrating the victory that he was not aware that Yue was preparing for revenge.
One day when he was walking in his garden, he saw the prince come, soaking wet, with his bow and arrows. "Such a mess, my son. What's the matter?" asked the king.
"I was playing in the backyard," the prince replied, "Then I heard a sound in the bush. I looked and found a cicada."
"But then I also saw," he added, "a mantisstalking behind the cicada, while an oriole in its turn was about to pounce on the mantis from behind."
So I stretched my bow and aimed an arrow at the oriole. But I did not notice the pond behind myself. Plop I went into the water and out I came like this.
The king laughed, for he was amused by the mantis that was so keen on catching the cicada that it did not beware of the oriole.
But the prince said, "A similar thing is happening when you only think of invading Qi without minding Yue, Father." The king was not pleased and he sent the prince away. But the prince was right. Soon Yue did strike back and defeat wu. The mantis is likened to people who only see immediate gains without caution.
吳王夫差戰(zhàn)勝越國(guó)后，以為越國(guó)從此再也不敢興兵，就整日享樂慶祝，完全沒有留言越國(guó)正養(yǎng)精蓄銳，準(zhǔn)備復(fù)國(guó)。
一天早上，吳王正在御花園中散步，突然他看見太子手持弓箭，全身濕淋淋地走來。“哈，你為何弄得這樣狼狽呢？”吳王問。
“我剛才在后花園玩的時(shí)候，聽到一種聲音，我找了找，發(fā)現(xiàn)一只蟬?！?BR> “只見蟬的背后悄悄爬來一只螳螂，而螳螂身后又飛來一只黃雀，準(zhǔn)備捕捉它，”太子又說。
“我慢慢提起了箭瞄準(zhǔn)了黃雀，沒料到我身后又一水池，我一不小心便掉進(jìn)池里，便成了現(xiàn)在這個(gè)樣子了?！?BR> 國(guó)王大笑，呵呵，這就是只貪眼前利益，不顧背后的禍患，真是愚蠢的可以。
“父王，其實(shí)天下類似這樣的事情太多了，就像現(xiàn)在我國(guó)準(zhǔn)備攻打齊國(guó)，卻沒有提防越國(guó)會(huì)隨時(shí)滅吳復(fù)國(guó)！”這國(guó)王不高興的讓太子走了。但是，太子的話是對(duì)的，后來吳國(guó)果然給越國(guó)所滅?！绑氩断s”比作只見眼前利益而不顧身后大患的目光短淺的人物。
