Passage 1
B
Listen to the passage and answer the questions
The western dinner table is new for many Chinese. Instead of chopsticks, there are forks, knives and spoons. Many Chinese don’t know what to do. In most western restaurants and homes, there are rules about how to talk, eat and sit. And the creation atmosphere is very different from we find here in China. In my childhood, dinner was enjoyed with low voices and the topic open for discussion was very much restricted. We’ll not be allowed to talk about anything that would possibly affect our appetite. If I have to leave the table to use the toilet, I have to excuse myself without saying what I am going to do, “May I be excused please? I need to wash my hands.” I would say.
My mother would say “sure”.
My father would often play a joke on us by saying “Your hands don’t look dirty to me”.
1. Why don’t many Chinese know what to do at western dinner table?
2. What kind of topic was not allowed as the dinner table in the speaker’s home?
3. Could they talk loudly at the dinner table?

Thomas Edison, the greatest American inventor, is believed to be the first person to use “Hello” in the late 1800s. At first, people had greeted each other on the telephone with “Are you there?” They were not sure the new instrument could really carry voices. Thomas Edison, however, was a man of few words, he wasted no time. The first time he picked up the phone, he did not ask if anyone was there.
