    [00:05.64]In this section
[00:08.54]you will hear introductory lecture to a course on South-East Asia.
[00:15.12]First read the summary of the lecture made by a student
    [00:20.30]and look at questions 30 to 40.
[00:25.39]As you listen complete the summary,
[00:30.25]using no more than three words for each answer.
[00:35.63]The first one has been done for you as an example.
[00:40.83]My name is Paul Stange.I'm the coordinator of this course.
    [00:46.63]It's called South-East Asian Traditions.
[00:50.73]I'm also the author of the study guide and course reader
[00:56.03]and you should have those in front of you.
    [01:00.24]As well as these you'll need two textbooks for the course;
[01:05.23]there's the one by Osborne and there's another by Legge.
[01:10.71]I'll talk a bit more about the reading materials in a moment.
[01:15.81]Now if you haven't got these materials,
[01:20.30]you can buy the textbooks at the university book shop
[01:24.98]and you can collect the study guide and the course reader from me
[01:30.15]on your way out of the lecture.
[01:33.62]The purpose of this lecture is simply orientation.
[01:38.82]What I'm going to do is introduce myself,
    [01:43.21]talk you through the course,
[01:46.42]and give you some additional advice--apart from in the study guide
[01:53.01]--on dealing with the various assignments for the course.
    [01:57.32]First of all,the materials.
[02:01.10]You'll find the two textbooks very clear
[02:05.28]and they give a good, basic coverage of the history of the region.
[02:10.48]Most of the readings in the reader are fairly easy going,
[02:15.89]but I have to warm you that two of them are quite difficult.
[02:21.58]These are the readings by S mail and Bender.
[02:25.89]And,of these two,the one by Bender is perhaps the more challenging.
[02:32.58]But don't let that put you off,
    [02:36.06]because understanding these two readings
[02:40.63]is important to help you develop a clearer understanding of the cultures.
[02:46.22]In other words they'll help you acquire greater sensitivity
[02:52.23]to the differences between the various cultures in the region.
    [02:57.71]Now,the course itself.
[03:00.92]The course has multiple aims. It's primarily a history course.
    [03:07.43]But it's not only a history course.
[03:11.32]It is,in most respects a cultural history course focusing on South-East Asia.
[03:18.92]Nevertheless the course is,as you'll see from the materials,
[03:24.23]an introduction to the South-East Asian studies components of the Asian studies program.
[03:31.12]In looking at the cultural history of South-East Asia
[03:36.11]there are two major influences to be considered:
    [03:40.60]the Chinese and the Indian.
[03:44.78]It is important lot to forget the extensive influence
[03:49.77]that these two countries have had in the region.
[03:54.16]China has been trading throughout the region
[03:58.13]since at least the sixth century,
[04:02.02]so many of its cultural and social traditions
[04:06.73]have influenced the countries in the area.
[04:10.83]And religious practices from India have helped form today's culture.
[04:16.81]So we'll be looking for the links and the connections
[04:21.49]between traditional patterns and today's developments in the region.
[04:27.36]I think you can now begin to see how these past influences
[04:32.56]might form a background for the present-day social practices.
[04:37.66]And in the same way this course will form a basis or background
[04:43.53]for second and third year courses, with their focus on the modern period,
[04:49.72]and in particular the economic and political situation of the region.
[04:55.81]So that's the outline of the course.
[04:59.49]I'd like to go on now to look at what you have to do,
    [05:05.01]you assignments and so on.
[05:08.19]That is the end of the Listening Test.
[05:12.69]You now have half a minute check your answers.
    [05:18.38]S YOUR TAPE
    [05:21.67]You now have ten minutes
[05:25.77]to transfer your answers to the Listening answer sheet
