[00:53.58]This site is important because it tells us about how people lived in the past.
[01:00.53]What steps have been taken to protect the site?
[01:04.18]Visitors are not allowed to go inside the house.
[01:09.64]Insead they can walk around the house, and look at the park behind it.

[03:01.37]READING
[03:06.93]A CITY OF HEROES
[03:10.48]Where there is a river,there is a city.
[03:15.16]Perhaps this is not always true,
[03:19.24]but it is true that many of the world's greatest cities
[03:24.49]have been built on the banks of a river.
[03:28.56]The Neva River flows through the centre of St Peterburg in Russia.
[03:34.91]Three hundred years ago,
[03:38.54]the Russian Czar Peter the Great came here and built a new capital
[03:44.71]St Petersburg Peter the Great,
[03:49.46]like his country, was strong and proud.
[03:54.00]Many great palaces were built during his lifetime.
[03:58.86]The palaces were large and beautiful,
[04:03.02]and they often looked like something out of a fairy tale.
[04:07.98]St Petersburg has also been the centre of many important events in history.
[04:14.35]In 1941,the Germans tried to destroy the city.
[04:20.21]It was under attack for 900 days, but the people of the city never gave in.
[04:27.57]The Germans burned many of the palaces as they left.
[04:32.61]St Petersburg was almost in ruins:fires burned everywhere.
[04:39.28]Buildings were destroyed, and paintings and statues lay in pieces on the ground.
[04:46.54]Restoring the city and its cultural relics seemed impossible,
[04:52.41]but the people of this great city would not give up,
[04:57.38]"We will not let our history and culture be destroyed,
[05:02.42]and we will do everything we can to save our city!"
[05:07.59]When the Nazis had gone, the people of St Petersburg began rebuilding the city.
[05:14.75]Pieces of the palaces that had been hidden before the Nazis came
[05:20.60]could now be used to rebuild the city and its culture.
[05:26.16]It was not easy.
[05:29.33]Painters and workers had to be very careful when they were trying to bring the city back to life.
[05:36.69]It was difficult to save the palaces and buildings
[05:41.55]without destroying their old beauty.
[05:44.61]With the help of old paintings and photographs,
[05:49.05]the people of St Petersburg were able to bring back the beauty of their culture
[05:55.32]and history.
[05:58.24]Now,after years of hard work,
[06:02.79]parts of statues have been put back together and missing pieces have been replaced.
[06:09.63]Old paintings,
[06:12.69]including a portrait of Peter the Great
[06:17.08]which was found in the snow outside St Petersburg,
[06:22.41]have been carefully recreated,
[06:26.77]and the old palaces have been made as wonderful as in the past.
[06:32.83]today Peter the Great on his bronze horse
[06:38.08]can once again look out over the city he built.
[06:43.04]Like their hero Peter,
[06:46.39]the people of St Peterburg have shown that dreams can come true.
[06:52.34]Strong,proud and united
[06:56.50]the people of St Petersburg are the modern heroes of Russia.
