    [03:10.48]Where there is a river,there is a city.
    [03:15.16]Perhaps this is not always true,
    [03:19.24]but it is true that many of the world's greatest cities
    [03:24.49]have been built on the banks of a river.
    [03:28.56]The Neva River flows through the centre of St Peterburg in Russia.
    [03:34.91]Three hundred years ago,
    [03:38.54]the Russian Czar Peter the Great came here and built a new capital
    [03:44.71]St Petersburg Peter the Great,
    [03:49.46]like his country,was strong and proud.
    [03:54.00]Many great palaces were built during his lifetime.
    [03:58.86]The palaces were large and beautiful,
    [04:03.02]and they often looked like something out of a fairy tale.
    [04:07.98]St Petersburg has also been the centre of many important events in history.
    [04:14.35]In 1941,the Germans tried to destroy the city.
    [04:20.21]It was under attack for 900 days,but the people of the city never gave in.
    [04:27.57]The Germans burned many of the palaces as they left.
    [04:32.61]St Petersburg was almost in ruins:fires burned everywhere.
    [04:39.28]Buildings were destroyed,and paintings and statues lay in pieces on the ground.
    [04:46.54]Restoring the city and its cultural relics seemed impossible,
    [04:52.41]but the people of this great city would not give up,
    [04:57.38]"We will not let our history and culture be destroyed,
    [05:02.42]and we will do everything we can to save our city!"
    [05:07.59]When the Nazis had gone,the people of St Petersburg began rebuilding the city.
    [05:14.75]Pieces of the palaces that had been hidden before the Nazis came
    [05:20.60]could now be used to rebuild the city and its culture.
    [05:26.16]It was not easy.
    [05:29.33]Painters and workers had to be very careful when they were trying to bring the city back to life.
    [05:36.69]It was difficult to save the palaces and buildings
    [05:41.55]without destroying their old beauty.
    [05:44.61]With the help of old paintings and photographs,
    [05:49.05]the people of St Petersburg were able to bring back the beauty of their culture
    [05:55.32]and history.
    [05:58.24]Now,after years of hard work,
    [06:02.79]parts of statues have been put back together and missing pieces have been replaced.

    [06:12.69]including a portrait of Peter the Great
    [06:17.08]which was found in the snow outside St Petersburg,
