    C 容易弄錯的美語
    下面一些用語或口語,在字眼上,頗有相似之處,但在意義和用法上,卻有不同。使用時要特別小心,以免出錯。
    son of a gun 與 son of a bitch:
    son of a gun 是對好友表示一種驚訝的口語(an interjection or an exclamation of surprise between very good friends),有點像「壞蛋」、「家伙」的味道。
    但 son of a bitch(或 SOB)是美國人極為嚴(yán)重的罵人話(curse word),千萬不可亂用,以免鬧事。因為這不但意味這位 son 沒有確定的父親,同時母親也是缺乏道德和貞操(less virtuous)。 例如:
    * I have not seen you for a long time;you (are)son of a gun!(你這壞蛋啊,我好久不見你了!)
    * After the two men called each other“son of a bitch”(SOB),they started a fight.(這兩位男子互罵SOB後,就動起武來。)
    至於 son of a gun 的來由,據(jù)說從前女人可以住在海軍船上服務(wù)。結(jié)果一位女人生下孩子時,不知父親是誰,於是船上的人,就以「gun」做為孩子的 paternity,孩子也就被稱為「son of a gun」。雖然只用在好友中,但有時也真有壞蛋的意思(evil person or a rogue)所以不是恭維語(complimentary word),除非真正好友,少用為妙。
    at large 與 by and large:
    at large 當(dāng)形容詞,常用的意思是指嫌犯脫逃,逍遙法外(escape,referring to criminal before arrest)而 by and large 當(dāng)副詞用,意思是一般而言(generally speaking on the whole)。 例如:
    * The murder suspect is still at large. (兇手仍然逍遙法外)
    * By and large, I feel(that)the new proposal is sensible.(大體來說,我認(rèn)為新的建議是很切合實際的。)
    * By and large, most people will care about their weight. (一般而言,許多人關(guān)心他們的體重)
    然而,有時 at large 也有「一般」(in general)的意思。 例如:
    * The Chinese people at large are peace-loving. (一般中國人是愛好和平的)
    Here you go 與 Here you go again:
    Here you go 是指給別人東西時說:「這就是你要的」(=Here is what you want);有時也表示同意對方的意見(= you are right);有時又與 there you go 互用。
    * The cashier said, “Here you go!”when she gave me the change. (當(dāng)收款員找我零錢時,她說:「這就是!」)
    但是 Here you(或 we)go again 意思是「你又舊事重提了」,表示對一件事情多次重復(fù)的厭煩。(feel annoyed when something is repeated over and over again)。例如:
    * When he brought up the same issue to me, I said, “Here you go again!”(當(dāng)他向我提出同樣的問題時,我說:「又是老話題了!」) 至於“Here goes”又是指說話者開始做某事時說:「開始了」。例如:
    *“Here goes!”, shouted the racer as he started running.(當(dāng)賽跑者開始跑步時,喊著「我就開始了!」)
    to marry (someone)與 to be married to(someone): marry 當(dāng)做及物動詞時,多用主動語態(tài)(active voice)。 例如:
    * She married a man ten years younger(或older). (她嫁給一位比她小或大十歲的男人)
    = She married a man ten years her junior(或senior).
    但是 marry 用在被動語態(tài)時(passive voice),後面要用介系詞 to。 例如:
    * She is(was)married to a man ten years younger(older).
    = She is (was)married to a man ten years her junior(senior).(假如用 is,指目前還是夫妻,如用 was,可能已經(jīng)不是夫妻了)
    然而,在 married 後面用介系詞 by 時,又有「牧師證婚」的意思。 例如:
    * She was married by a man ten years younger. (是指為她證婚的牧師,比她小十歲。)
    * She was married by my father.(為他證婚的牧師是我老爸。)(因為牧師證婚已成過去,所以要用過去式 was。)
    near 與 near by:
    near 是介系詞(preposition)通常後面跟受詞(object),但是 near by(或 nearby)當(dāng)形容詞(adjective)意思是指「附近」(=close),只指某一地方(somewhere),沒有特定地點(no specific location)。 例如:
    * The school is near the railway station. (學(xué)校在火車站附近。)
    * The post office and library are near by. (郵局和圖書館都在附近。)
    可見 near by(或 nearby)通常後面不加受詞,不然就顯得 awkward 了。所以很少人說:
    * I ate at a near restaurant. 不過可以說:
    * I ate at a nearby restaurant.; 或
    * The restaurant where I ate is nearby.(不過也有老外用 near)
    school is open 與 the school is open:
    school is open (或 schools are open) 是指「學(xué)校開學(xué)」(classes are in session),這里的 open 是形容詞,school 前面不加冠詞 the,意味整個中小學(xué)的 school system。但是 the school is open,多指學(xué)校的建筑物開放著,但沒有學(xué)生上課。
    同理:He goes to school. 是指他去上學(xué)讀書受教育,而 He goes to the school. 又指他去學(xué)校的建筑物(看朋友、參觀等)。
    至於 School is closed.(或 Schools are closed.) 是指「學(xué)校停課」,前面也不加 the。
    注意:close 當(dāng)形容詞時,也有「附近」(nearby) 或「友善」(friendly) 的意思。 例如:
    * The school is close(=nearby).(學(xué)校在附近。)
    * That is a close neighborhood.(那是一個友善的住宅區(qū)),而 The school is opened at 8 a.m.; 或
    * The school is closed at 5 p.m.(都是指學(xué)校的建筑物開放或關(guān)閉的時間。)
    但是 The store is open. 是指店鋪在營業(yè)中(= Business is going on.),而 The store is closed. 又是指店鋪暫時不營業(yè)。
    假如店鋪是永久性的「關(guān)門大吉」,就應(yīng)該說:
    * The store was closed down. (permanently)
    不過 closed 當(dāng)形容詞時,又有「保守」(conservative)或受某種「限制」(restricted)的意思。 例如:
    * This is a closed community.(這是一個保守的社區(qū)。)(由於宗教信仰等原因,美國有的社區(qū)不歡迎外來的人。)
    D 美國人的口頭禪
    9. It is a shame!
    這是一句可以用在許多適當(dāng)情況的口語 (Catch-all phrase),是表示一種輕度的「遺憾」或「同情」(a form of sympathy or regret) 但沒有「羞恥」的意思。例如:
    It is a shame that your car got stuck in the snow.(你的汽車陷在雪里,真糟糕。)
    When I said, "I lost ten dollars from my pocket.",he replied, "It is a shame!"(當(dāng)我說:「我從口袋里掉了十塊錢」,他回答:「真遺憾?」)
    至於 "What a shame",其實與 "it is a shame" 意思相似,也有 "It is too bad" 的味道。例如:
    What a shame that his son's behavior is so rude.(他兒子的粗魯行為是令人遺憾的)
    10. May it ever be thus!
    意思是:希望保持現(xiàn)在的情況,不會改變。(I hope it will not change; may the situation always remain the same.),通常用在喜慶時,也有祝你與現(xiàn)在一樣的健康快樂之意。(I hope you are always as healthy and happy as now.) 例如:
    We are wonderful friends; may it ever be thus!(我們是好友,愿永遠(yuǎn)如此!)
    He said to the newly weds, "May it ever be thus!"(他對新婚夫婦說:「愿你們永遠(yuǎn)這樣的恩愛、幸?!?
    11. Am I being petty?
    意思是:「我是氣量小嗎?」或「我是心胸狹窄嗎?」(narrow-minded) 這是一個人做了或說了某件事情後,唯恐別人批評或指責(zé)而自加「反省」的表態(tài)。(或表示謙虛)
    這里用 verb to be 的現(xiàn)在進(jìn)行式,表示氣量小或心胸窄是「暫時性」的。而 Am I petty? 又是指「經(jīng)常性」的。(但是誰又愿意承認(rèn)自己是經(jīng)常的氣量小,心胸窄呢!所以為了「自尊心」,通常不說"I am petty",只說"I am being petty." 同理:
    Am I being over-reactive?(或 over sensitive?)(我是反應(yīng)過火或過份敏感嗎?)
    Are you being in bad mood?(你情緒不好嗎?)都是強調(diào)「暫時性」。否則就不必使用現(xiàn)在進(jìn)行式 (being)
    (主詞可用任何人稱代名詞 you, we, he, she, they 等,動詞可用任何時態(tài)。)
    12. Stay tuned!
    這多半是指播音員在收音機或電視上所說的。意思是:「稍等一下,下面還有」(Stay where you are in the same channel),但也可以表示對一件事情的繼續(xù)討論 (to keep continuing the same issue)。(tuned是形容詞,原意是調(diào)好電臺或電視)例如:
    Stay tuned, there will be more on this subject tomorrow.(稍等,這個問題明天再談。)
    Stay tuned 的等候時間,可長可短,要看情況而定。
    然而 "wait a moment" 通常是指 immediately,時間較短。例如:
    Stay tuned(或 wait a moment)I will be right back.(指馬上回來)
    但是:
    We have to stay tuned regarding the name change of our school.(我們必須等待校名的變更)(等待時間較長)
    13. You can say that again!
    這句話的意思是「我同意你」(I agree with you.)或「你對了」(You are right.)例如:
    When the professor spoke on human rights, the students responded, "You can say that again!"(當(dāng)教授談到人權(quán)時;學(xué)生回答說:「你說得對!」)
    雖然這句話的主詞通常只用第二人稱單數(shù) You,但在某些情況下,也可以用其他人稱。例如:
    When we heard Mr. Clinton's speech on tax reduction, my wife turned to me and said, "He can say that again!"(當(dāng)我們聽到柯林頓先生減稅的講演時,內(nèi)人轉(zhuǎn)頭對我說:「他說得對!」)
    14. Let me sleep on it.
    意思是「讓我考慮一下」或「讓我想想看」(let me think about it.)(這與 sleep 沒有關(guān)系)例如:
    Let me sleep on your proposal.(讓我考慮你的建議。)
    When he asked if she wanted to stay with him, she said, "Let me sleep on it."(當(dāng)他問她要不要留下來,她說:「要想想看」。)
    在 "let me sleep on it." 中,me 可用其他人稱代名詞(him, her, you, us, them 等),it 有時也用 this 或 that 代替。
    15. Take heart!
    意思是「勇敢些」、「不必苦惱」、「振作起來」(be brave; don't worry; don't let things get you down)(多半指感情方面,比較 emotional)例如:
    Take heart, and the situation will be better.(不必怕,情況會好些。)
    Take heart, I am sure you will be successful in the future.(振作起來吧,我相信你將來會成功的。)
    16. Tune him out!
    意思是「別聽他的」,「不必理會他」(don't listen to him; don't pay attention to him.)例如:
    Mr. Lee just talked nonsense; tune him out.(李先生在瞎扯,別聽他的。)
    I am going to tune her out when she begins to speak on the subject.(當(dāng)她談及主題時,我不想理會她。)
    The husband tuned out his wife when he was watching the football game.(老公看足球賽時沒有理會太座。)
    (tune out 有時也可連在一起使用)(在 "tune him out" 這句口語里,動詞 tune 可用任何時態(tài);受詞 him 也可用其他人稱代名詞。)
