Yang Li: Football is something that connects us all, isn't it? For example, I love to watch the World Cup and I suppose you do too.
William: Yes, international matches are very exciting. But as we shall hear in this programme a lot of young British people love football beyond the World Cup. It's an important part of their culture.
Yang Li: Totally. So in this second programme on football culture we'll be looking at why people support one team over another.
William: Raised by our listener Li Yan.

I am a big fan of premier league. What impresses me most is the fans' loyalty to their favourite teams. I want to know something about this football culture. How do they show their support and why do they support one team over another? Thanks.
William: Yes. So why do people support one team over another? We asked a few colleagues at the BBC.

The team I've always supported since I was a child is Aberdeen, and it's because my dad's side of the family come from this city Aberdeen. They used to be very good in the 1980s when I was a child; sadly they're not anymore. And of course my surname is also Aberdein so I always thought that was a perfect reason to support the team.
    Yang Li: Finn
William: His dad's side of the family come from the city of Aberdeen.
Finn Aberdein, although the spelling is slightly different.

I support Arsenal and I support them because I actually used to work at the football ground and that's what made me get into football, watching Arsenal play live. Unfortunately since I stopped working there I don't actually go to the games live anymore but yeah, I watch them whenever they play, whenever I can.
William: That's our colleague Mala from the BBC. She used to work at Arsenal's football ground and watched the team play live.

Li: Can you tell me why you support Arsenal?
Well, I'm from Argentina and there are some football players from my country playing there in this team. And also because (it's) a team with history, I like it a lot, I like the way they play.
William: Well last but not least Li, I suppose people tend to support the winning team don't they?
    Li: Yes they do.

Well we haven't had a great season, last season, but we're hoping that the next one will be much better than the one before, so...
I support Manchester United because they win a lot and I really like the characters, the manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, the players... I like the drama of watching a team like that.

William: Diarmuid supports Manchester United because they win a lot.
