When a global company with $35bn in annual revenues presents its financial results, one might expect most of the attention to be focused on the accounts. But on Monday, there was a definite sense that it was the woman presenting the numbers who stole the show.
Cathy Meng is Huawei’s chief financial officer, but perhaps more importantly, she is also the daughter of Ren Zhengfei, the company’s founder. Her on-the-record meeting with foreign press is the first such appearance for someone from her family, and positions her as the new public face of a company that will probably soon become the world’s biggest telecoms equipment provider by revenues.
A round-faced, fast-talking woman with an agreeable smile, the 40-year-old describes herself as someone who likes to argue and challenge.
That will be something she will probably have to do plenty of, if she is to turn around Huawei’s negative reputation in the US, which is hampering further development.
In the minds of many outsiders, Ms Meng’s father has become a larger-than-life figure. Before Mr Ren founded Huawei in 1987, he was an officer in the People’s Liberation Army, a detail in his biography that has driven many western observers to wonder whether his company’s routers and switches could help China spy on or even attack vital communications networks in the US.
A congressional report last October demanded that Huawei be banned from doing business in the US. “They are not private companies,” the report claimed, referring to Huawei and ZTE, its smaller, state-controlled Chinese peer.
Huawei denies having special ties with the military. It also says that following an employee share scheme which has been running for more than 20 years, the company is owned by its staff and Mr Ren’s stake is a mere 1.4 per cent.
But the founder’s refusal to lay open the details of who owns what in Huawei has allowed allegations that Huawei is a security risk to fester, particularly in the prized US market, the second biggest in the world after China.
The country represents less than 5 per cent of Huawei’s revenues, and although Huawei counts 45 of the world’s 50 leading telecom operators as its customers, the biggest American ones are not among them.
The company has also seen some attempts at buying US assets fail over the past few years.
“As Huawei is planting its flag in every corner of the globe, Ren Zhengfei and Huawei must naturally prove their ‘identity’ to the world over and over again,” write Tian Tao and Wu Chunbo, two advisers to the company, in a recent book about Huawei.

Ms Meng is very aware of these problems. She has come with a cautious promise that Huawei will eventually reveal more about its owners, and also professes an open mind towards eventually taking the company public. “We will honour our commitment to transparency and openness,” she keeps repeating.
華為的兩名顧問——田濤和吳春波在最近一本關于該公司的書中寫道:“華為要把旗幟插在全球每一處角落,自然,任正非和華為又得不斷向世界證明‘身份’?!?BR> Her emergence into the spotlight is part of broader efforts by Huawei to deflect attention away from its founder. Last year, the company initiated a new management system under which members of its board of directors take turns as ‘rotating acting CEOs’.
她不斷重復著這一句話:“我們將履行開放透明的承諾?!?BR> “It is much better not to rely on one person only, and the rotating CEO system will help us guarantee that we can continue to thrive,” says Ms Meng.
Chinese observers believe that her fresh image and easy-going character could help tweak Huawei’s public image. A mother of two, Ms Meng uses her spare time on weekends for 8km-long speedwalks along the shore of the South China Sea at Shenzhen, where Huawei is based.
Yet, there is no doubt that Mr Ren remains firmly in control. The 68-year-old is a charismatic figure who prides himself on having built his business against pressure from state-owned rivals. ZTE, the biggest such competitor, on Sunday said it expected to report a net loss of between Rmb2.5bn ($401m) and Rmb2.9bn in 2012, in contrast to a 33 per cent jump in net profits to Rmb15.4bn for Huawei.
According to Huawei executives, Mr Ren remains the main authority, and that applies to his daughter as well. “He was a forbearing father when I was little, and he has been a strict father ever since I entered Huawei,” she says.
Having been a regular visitor to the Huawei offices since she used the company’s copy machine as a high school student, Ms Meng started working at the reception in 1993, a job her father thought would help her develop her people skills.
她表示:“在我小時候,他曾是一個慈父,自從我進入華為以來,他變成了一位嚴父?!?BR> She received a master's degree in management from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1998 and says that only from then on did she start working on financial and accounting tasks in the company.
Today, Ms Meng is taking on a broader role. Faced with probing questions about the company’s image problems, she accuses the US of treating Huawei unfairly. “Whenever trade protectionism intervenes with competition in the market, it is the consumer who suffers in the end,” she says.
The combative tone is no accident. Faced with the constant barrage of suspicions, Mr Ren has taught Huawei managers an esprit de corps that focuses on sticking together against external enemies.
“The only thing that could bring us down would be internal corruption,” says Ms Meng.
In language true to her father’s military training, she adds that Huawei’s executive directors took a joint oath last week pledging high moral standards “so that the fortress won’t be breached from within”.
