“If you ask me television is unhealthy。” Isaid to my roommate Walter, as I walked into the living room. “While you aresitting passively in front of the TV set, your muscles are turning to fat. Yourcomplexion is fading. And your eyesight is being ruined?!?“Shhh!” Walter puthis finger to his lips: “This is an intriguing murder mystery?!?“Really?” Ireplied, “But you know, the brain is destroyed by TV viewing. Creativity iskilled by that box and people are kept from communicating with one another. From my point of view, TV is the cause of declining interest in school and thefailure of our entire educational system?!?“Aha. I kind of see your point?!盬alter said softly:”But see, the woman on the witness stand in this story isbeing questioned about a murder that was committed one hundred years ago?!盜gnoring his enthusiastic description of the plot, I went on with my argument:”AsI see it, I explained. Not only are most TV programs badly written andproduced, but viewers are also manipulated by the mass media. As far as I amconcerned, TV watchers are cut off from reality, from nature, from otherpeople, from life itself?!?I was confident in my ability to persuade. After ashort silence, my roommate said:”Anyway, I’ve been planning to watch the footballgame. I’m going to change the channel?!?Don’t touch that dial, I shouted:“Iwant to find out how the mystery turns out。” I’m not sure I got my point tocross。
