1.behind schedule 落后于計(jì)劃或預(yù)定時(shí)間
    該習(xí)語的字面意思是"落后于預(yù)定時(shí)間".例如:The train is two hours behind schedule.(火車晚點(diǎn)兩小時(shí)。)與之相關(guān)的習(xí)語還有on schedule,意思是"按時(shí)間表;及時(shí);準(zhǔn)時(shí)";ahead of schedule,意思是"提前".
    A: Are you OK? 你沒事吧?
    B: Yeah. 沒有。
    A: I worried about you all the time. You've come back at last! 我一直擔(dān)心你。你終于回來了。
    B: I'm sorry to have kept you waiting. 對(duì)不起,讓你久等了。
    A: What happened to you? 怎么回事?
    B: The train is behind schedule. 火車晚點(diǎn)了。
    A: No wonder. 怪不得。
    2.behind the eightball 處于非常不利的地位
    eightball指"臺(tái)球比賽中的8號(hào)黑球".在臺(tái)球比賽中,只有將其他所有的球都打進(jìn)袋中才能擊打黑球。因此,其他的球如果在黑球的后面,則是"非常不利的處境",behind the eightball即比喻某人"處于非常不利的地位".

    該習(xí)語出自一則貓和老鼠的寓言故事:老鼠們?yōu)榱瞬槐回堊プ?,就想出了一個(gè)在貓的脖子上系鈴的良策,但是誰去給貓系鈴呢?(Who will bell the cat?)。沒有一只老鼠敢去。因此bell the cat指"舍己救人,為他人利益冒險(xiǎn)".

    point是名詞,有"要點(diǎn),中心意思,核心問題"的意思;beside the point字面意思為"在核心問題旁邊",引申為"偏離中心".
