What Does Alibaba's Announcement Mean for Yahoo?
Today, Chinese Internet giant Alibaba Group announced a split up of its hugely popular eBay-like site for online commerce, and raised the possibility of going public at some point. The announcement sent happy vibes all the way to Sunnyvale, Calif.
Yahoo owns a roughly 40% stake in Alibaba, representing perhaps half of Yahoo's $19.6 billion market value.
An important relationship indeed, but one that has been strained beyond belief. Yahoo said they were blindsided by the move of Alibaba Group and its Chairman, Jack Ma, to shift ownership of Alipay, one of the Alibaba business units. For his part, Ma said Yahoo and another big Alibaba investor, Japan's Softbank, 'engaged in stalling tactics' as members of the Alibaba board, and were wrong about the Alipay controversy.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster today said the possibility of Alibaba going public is a relative non-event financially, but a good sign of détente between Alibaba and its partners:
'What is important is Alibaba specificity mentioned in a press release that 'the board of Alibaba is fully behind this decision,'' Munster pointed out. 'The bottom consulting the board on a decision like this should be standard operating procedure, but given the Alipay spin out, we view this as a potential sign of healing between Alibaba Group, Softbank, and Yahoo.'
Yahoo shares are higher by 1.6% this morning.
