1. kick ass 了不起
A: Wow, you fixed my computer in less than 10 minutes. You'regood。
A: 哇！ 你不到十分鐘就把我的計(jì)算機(jī)修好了呀！ 你很棒！
B: Yep. I just kick ass。
B: 是的！ 我就是厲害！
"kick ass" 除了字面上的“踢*”外， 還有“厲害、打敗”的意思。當(dāng)“踢*”時(shí)， 比如某人放你鴿子， 你很氣，就可以說： "I'm going to kick his ass." (我得踢他的*)。當(dāng)“厲害”用時(shí)，就像上面例句一樣用。"kick ass" 還可作“打敗某人的意思”。比如某人一向在某方面比你強(qiáng)， 終于有一天你比他厲害了，你就可以說："Hahaha...I kicked your ass."。覺得 "ass" 太難聽的人， 就用 "butt"吧！

3. XYZ 檢查你的拉鏈

老兄??！ 檢查一下你的拉煉吧。
"XYZ" 是 "Check your zipper." 的意思。在美國，填表選項(xiàng)時(shí)多用打“X”來表示(臺(tái)灣則用打勾表示)。這個(gè)選項(xiàng)的動(dòng)作就叫"Check", 也就是這里的XYZ 的 X所代表的。Y 是Your, Z 就是 Zipper 啰！
4. Hit the road。上路了
A: Do you want to come in for some tea?
A: 你要不要進(jìn)來喝個(gè)茶呢？
B: No. I'm running late. I really need to hit the road。
B: 不了。我快遲到了， 得上路了。
"running late" 是快遲到了的意思。
"Hit the road" 的 "hit" 有“去”的意思。好比某人每周去健身房三次， 你就可以說 "He hits thegym three times a week."。

"hang out" 是和朋友一起做一些事?？措娪?、逛街、聊天都算。也不限指異性朋友。
趙晴注： 你可以問你的朋友，Hey, what did you guys do this weekend. 你的朋友可以說， well, nothingspecial. we just hung out. 這個(gè)意思就是， 也沒干什么， 就是呆著。
6. click (兩人)合得來
I really like talking to her. I think we two really click。
我很喜歡和她說話。我覺得我們兩個(gè)蠻合得來的。
好玩的字吧！ 不過 click 不一定只用在異性之間。朋友之間的頻率相同也可以用。
以前只知道click the mouse,真是鼠目寸光啊
趙晴注：當(dāng)兩個(gè)人不click的時(shí)候， 你通常可以說， I don't know...but the chemistry doesn'tseem right. chemistry 這里指的是兩個(gè)人不來電， 指同性異性都可以。
7. suck 差勁 ; 糟透了

"suck" 是“差勁”的意思。 "That movie sucks." 是“那部電影真是糟透了”的意思。
趙晴注：倒霉東西當(dāng)然就是sucker.。。你可以說 these files are a mess! it is gonna takeforever to sort out these suckers. sucker通常不指人。
8. catch some Zs
小睡一下
A: Excuse me. I have to catch some Zs。
A: 抱歉！ 我想小睡一下。
B: I thought you just woke up. Sleepy head。
B: 我以為你才剛睡醒。愛睡蟲。
漫畫里的人睡覺， 不是都畫"Z,Z,Z..."來表示嗎？ 這里的 "catch some Zs" 就是這樣來的。"I haveto catch some Zs." 也可以說"I have to take a nap." 或 "I need tosnooze."。
趙晴注： 對(duì)不起， 我剛剛睡著了?？梢哉f， oops, I just dozed off。
9. take a dump
上大號(hào)
A: Would you mind closing the door? I'm trying to take a dumphere。
A: 你可不可以把門關(guān)起來呢？ 我正在上大號(hào)。
B: Well, learn to lock the door next time。
B: 那么下次學(xué)會(huì)把門鎖起來吧！
"dump" 是“丟掉”的意思， “丟”什么不必我解釋了吧？
“我要上廁所”(大小號(hào)都一樣) 可以說 "I need to use the restroom." 或簡單地說 "I needto go."。
趙晴注： dump也有垃圾堆的意思。你可以說， I can't believe you actually live here! It is a dump!--你住的地方真爛. 但是， take a dump是一種比較粗俗的說法， 一般男性多用. 通常大家會(huì)說 #1 或者 #2,跟我們的說法一樣。
想去上廁所， 你可以說，mother nature is calling?；蛘哒f的文雅一點(diǎn)--I am going to use the facility.facility 這里指的就是restroom. 在別人家里， 你通常會(huì)問， may I use the bathroom?bathroom這里就是廁所的意思
10. crank up
把聲量調(diào)大
A: Hey! The volume is too low. Why don't you crank it upsome?
A: 嘿！ 這聲量太小了。你把它調(diào)大一點(diǎn)好嗎？
B: No problem。
B: 沒問題。
這里的“聲量調(diào)大”也可以說 "turn it up"。意思是一樣的。
cranky 則是形容人暴躁、易生氣。如： "Why are you so cranky today? Somethinghappened?" 你今天怎么這么容易生氣？ 發(fā)生什么事了嗎？
趙晴注：和cranky同義的詞是grumpy. I am being grumpy because I didn't sleep welllast night。
11. Shoot! 說吧！

A: 我想請(qǐng)問你一個(gè)問題。

"Shoot!" 除了當(dāng)“說吧！”外， 很多女孩子也用它來代替 "Shit!", 因?yàn)橛X得后者聽起來不雅。

趙晴注： 要想說，我知道這個(gè)可能沒戲.。。你可以說， I know it is a long shot, but I would still liketo give it a try. 你起草了一份計(jì)劃書， 發(fā)給項(xiàng)目組里面的同事請(qǐng)他們幫忙修改， 你可以說， this is myfirst shot at the project proposal, please feel free to edit as yousee fit. 你也可以說， this is my first stab. Stab是桶一刀子的意思， 放在這里就變成myfirst try。
13. Got you! (騙、嚇.。。)到你了吧！
A: My sister just now called and said she's moving in withus。
A: 我姐姐剛剛打電話來， 說她要搬進(jìn)來跟我們一塊兒住。
B: What?
B: 什么！
A: Got you!
A: 上當(dāng)了吧！
"Get you" 是“(騙、嚇、捉弄.。。)到你了吧！”的意思。油畫班上有一個(gè)同學(xué)有一次想捉弄我。趁我正要把畫具收到柜子里時(shí)忽然把柜子的門關(guān)起來，想趁機(jī)把我的手夾住。 結(jié)果我閃得快， 使他的惡計(jì)失敗。我便哈哈的對(duì)他說："Haha.. You didn't getme."。
趙晴注： got you要放在語境里面看意思. 這個(gè)說法本身還有"明白了" 的意思。
--can you make 20copies of this document and give it to all department heads?
--Got you!
而i don't get it通常是我弄不明白的意思. 還有就是別人說了一個(gè)笑話， 你沒聽懂的時(shí)候， 你可以說， what is so funny? i don'tget it。
14. no-brainer
不必花腦筋的事物
A: How do you use this program? It looks quite complicated。
A: 你怎么樣用這個(gè)軟件呢？ 看起來蠻復(fù)雜的。
B: No. Looks can be deceiving. This thing is actually ano-brainer. Let me show you。
B: 不會(huì)！ 外表有時(shí)是會(huì)騙人的。這個(gè)東西其實(shí)很容易(不必花腦筋的)。我玩給你看！
"Looks can be deceiving." 是“外表有時(shí)是會(huì)騙人的”的意思。也許你的競爭對(duì)方把自己抬高，表現(xiàn)出很厲害的樣子， 你的朋友就可以說"Looks can be deceiving. He may be just a papertiger."來安慰你。
15. work one's butt off 很努力地(做一件事)
A: I can't believe all my work is gone just like this. I'veworked my butt off on this all day。
A: 我不敢相信我的心血就這樣丟掉了！我今天整天辛辛苦苦都在搞這個(gè)！
B: What happened? Computer crashed?
B: 怎么啦？ 計(jì)算機(jī)當(dāng)了嗎？
發(fā)現(xiàn)美語里不少口語都跟"butt"(**)有關(guān)， 像 "kick ass"、"kiss ass"(見本單元第一頁)。這里的"work one's butt off" 也是。還有一個(gè)"freeze one's buttoff"(冷得把**凍僵)也是喔！
趙晴注： work one'sbutt/ass off 如果你不愿意說butt 或者ass 這個(gè)詞的時(shí)候 (大多數(shù)人在正式或者半正式場合都會(huì)回避這兩個(gè)詞)，通常你可以說 I have worked my tail off. 同樣， something is a pain in theass 意思是， 什么東西讓人討厭/頭疼死了。你還可以說 something or somebody is apain in the neck。
16. push around 驅(qū)使(某人)
A. Gary, do you think you can rewrite this paper. I don't reallylike the topic。
A: Gary, 你想你是不是可以把這個(gè)報(bào)告重寫一遍。我并不是很喜歡那個(gè)主題。
B: Hey, I'm only trying to help you out. You shouldn't be pushingme around like this。
B: 嘿！ 我是在幫你忙耶！ 你不應(yīng)該這樣指使我喔！
“把一個(gè)人推來推去”應(yīng)該和“指使”很容易聯(lián)想吧！
趙晴注： 想到另外一個(gè)詞， pushover, 指的是沒有主意/沒有主見/容易被別人說服的一種人. you shouldn't ask her for where togo for dinner. She is a total push over
17. brush off 不理；默視
A: Have you talked to Mr. Lambert about Ian's obscene speechtowards you?
A: 你跟 Lambert 先生提過 Ian 對(duì)你講的猥褻的話嗎？
B: Yes, but he brushed it off as if it were not a big deal tohim。
B: 有！ 但他輕輕帶過(不理)， 好象他覺得那并沒有什么！
"brush away(aside)" 也是“不理”的意思。如"He brushed aside ourobjection."(他無視我們的反對(duì))。
趙晴注： 類似的說法還有， thisis a serious mistake. you shouldn't just shrug it off likethat。
18. boss around
頤指氣使
A: Oh! No. I've got assigned to work with Marvin for our groupproject。
A: 噢！ 不！ 我被分配跟 Marvin 一起做團(tuán)體作業(yè)。
B: Ooh! I heard that he love to boss people around。
B: 唉呀！ 我聽說他很愛指使人的。
"boss around" 和 "push around" 都是“指使人”的意思。說一個(gè)人愛命令人也可以說"He is verybossy."。
19. Oh, boy! 乖乖！ 唉呀！真是！
A: Guess what? We first got a flat tire, and now my cell phone isdead。
A: 你猜怎么了？ 首先我門的車爆胎了， 現(xiàn)在我的行動(dòng)電話又沒電了。
B: Oh, boy!
B: 唉！
"flat tire" 是“爆胎”的意思”。
"Oh, boy!"是美國人用的一種感嘆表示詞句。不必問他們?yōu)槭裁床徽f "Oh, girl" 還是別的，因?yàn)樗麄円膊恢馈?BR> 趙晴注： ohboy在老年人里面尤為常用. 年輕人可以說， oh, crap! 或是最常見的 oh, no!
20. bound to 必定
A: Dan forgot his map?
A: Dan 忘了帶地圖了嗎？
B: Yep! And he's bound to lose his way。
B: 是的！ 他鐵定要迷路了。
"bound to" 是必定的意思。 “你死定了！”就可以說 "You're bound to die."。
趙晴注： 想說誰死定了，最簡單的說法是 you are doomed!
21. all set 都準(zhǔn)備妥當(dāng)
A. Is my car ready yet?
A: 我的車好了嗎？
B: Yep! We just need to get this paper work done and you'll beall set。
B: 是的！ 我們只要把這份“文書工作”完成， 你就一切都準(zhǔn)備妥當(dāng)了！
第一次聽到老美這樣對(duì)我說時(shí)， 我才剛來美國一個(gè)月。我到修車廠提領(lǐng)我的車的時(shí)候， 付完修車費(fèi)后， 老板對(duì)我說"O.K. You'reall set."。結(jié)果一臉狐疑地看著他說"Pardon?"。老板便微笑的向我解釋那是表示我的車已經(jīng)都修好了，我已經(jīng)一切都完成了。有時(shí)， 你到超市買東西， 買完要付帳時(shí)， 店員也會(huì)對(duì)你說"Are you allset?"。意思是問你是否想買的東西都找到了。
"paper work" 是指像“契約”、“證明”等等之類的文書表格。
趙晴注： 這個(gè)解釋的很好。在店里結(jié)帳的時(shí)候店員還會(huì)經(jīng)常說到的一句話是 did you find everything all right? 這只是跟你客氣一下，你說 yep 就可以了。
22. dirty work 卑鄙的工作； 討厭的工作
A: All right. You go ahead and sign this paper and I'll do thedirty work。
A: 好吧！ 你就把這個(gè)東西(紙)簽了， 剩下來的“下流的工作”就交給我了。

B: 聽起來不錯(cuò)！
"go ahead" 在美語中很常用， 除了“進(jìn)行去做”的意思， 還有其它的用法， 以后再看。
"dirty work" 在此指的是一些沒人要作的扮壞人的事。我有一個(gè)朋友遇人不淑， 室友出去旅行一去不回(并不是死掉)，卻不來電話， 也不付他該付的房租。三個(gè)月后這個(gè)朋友氣炸了， 就向房東提出要另找室友的要求， 房東就請(qǐng)這位朋友填一張紙，然后把他室友的東西搬到別的地方去了。這個(gè)房東作的就是這里說的 "dirty work" 了。

發(fā)現(xiàn)美語里不少口語都跟"butt"(**)有關(guān)， 像 "kick ass"、"kiss ass"(見本單元第一頁)。這里的"work one's butt off" 也是。還有一個(gè)"freeze one's buttoff"(冷得把**凍僵)也是喔！
趙晴注： work one'sbutt/ass off 如果你不愿意說butt 或者ass 這個(gè)詞的時(shí)候 (大多數(shù)人在正式或者半正式場合都會(huì)回避這兩個(gè)詞)，通常你可以說 I have worked my tail off. 同樣， something is a pain in theass 意思是， 什么東西讓人討厭/頭疼死了。你還可以說 something or somebody is apain in the neck。
16. push around 驅(qū)使(某人)
A. Gary, do you think you can rewrite this paper. I don't reallylike the topic。
A: Gary, 你想你是不是可以把這個(gè)報(bào)告重寫一遍。我并不是很喜歡那個(gè)主題。
B: Hey, I'm only trying to help you out. You shouldn't be pushingme around like this。
B: 嘿！ 我是在幫你忙耶！ 你不應(yīng)該這樣指使我喔！
“把一個(gè)人推來推去”應(yīng)該和“指使”很容易聯(lián)想吧！
趙晴注： 想到另外一個(gè)詞， pushover, 指的是沒有主意/沒有主見/容易被別人說服的一種人. you shouldn't ask her for where togo for dinner. She is a total push over
17. brush off 不理；默視
A: Have you talked to Mr. Lambert about Ian's obscene speechtowards you?
A: 你跟 Lambert 先生提過 Ian 對(duì)你講的猥褻的話嗎？
B: Yes, but he brushed it off as if it were not a big deal tohim。
B: 有！ 但他輕輕帶過(不理)， 好象他覺得那并沒有什么！
"brush away(aside)" 也是“不理”的意思。如"He brushed aside ourobjection."(他無視我們的反對(duì))。
趙晴注： 類似的說法還有， thisis a serious mistake. you shouldn't just shrug it off likethat。
18. boss around
頤指氣使
A: Oh! No. I've got assigned to work with Marvin for our groupproject。
A: 噢！ 不！ 我被分配跟 Marvin 一起做團(tuán)體作業(yè)。
B: Ooh! I heard that he love to boss people around。
B: 唉呀！ 我聽說他很愛指使人的。
"boss around" 和 "push around" 都是“指使人”的意思。說一個(gè)人愛命令人也可以說"He is verybossy."。
19. Oh, boy! 乖乖！ 唉呀！真是！
A: Guess what? We first got a flat tire, and now my cell phone isdead。
A: 你猜怎么了？ 首先我門的車爆胎了， 現(xiàn)在我的行動(dòng)電話又沒電了。
B: Oh, boy!
B: 唉！
"flat tire" 是“爆胎”的意思”。
"Oh, boy!"是美國人用的一種感嘆表示詞句。不必問他們?yōu)槭裁床徽f "Oh, girl" 還是別的，因?yàn)樗麄円膊恢馈?BR> 趙晴注： ohboy在老年人里面尤為常用. 年輕人可以說， oh, crap! 或是最常見的 oh, no!
20. bound to 必定
A: Dan forgot his map?
A: Dan 忘了帶地圖了嗎？
B: Yep! And he's bound to lose his way。
B: 是的！ 他鐵定要迷路了。
"bound to" 是必定的意思。 “你死定了！”就可以說 "You're bound to die."。
趙晴注： 想說誰死定了，最簡單的說法是 you are doomed!
21. all set 都準(zhǔn)備妥當(dāng)
A. Is my car ready yet?
A: 我的車好了嗎？
B: Yep! We just need to get this paper work done and you'll beall set。
B: 是的！ 我們只要把這份“文書工作”完成， 你就一切都準(zhǔn)備妥當(dāng)了！
第一次聽到老美這樣對(duì)我說時(shí)， 我才剛來美國一個(gè)月。我到修車廠提領(lǐng)我的車的時(shí)候， 付完修車費(fèi)后， 老板對(duì)我說"O.K. You'reall set."。結(jié)果一臉狐疑地看著他說"Pardon?"。老板便微笑的向我解釋那是表示我的車已經(jīng)都修好了，我已經(jīng)一切都完成了。有時(shí)， 你到超市買東西， 買完要付帳時(shí)， 店員也會(huì)對(duì)你說"Are you allset?"。意思是問你是否想買的東西都找到了。
"paper work" 是指像“契約”、“證明”等等之類的文書表格。
趙晴注： 這個(gè)解釋的很好。在店里結(jié)帳的時(shí)候店員還會(huì)經(jīng)常說到的一句話是 did you find everything all right? 這只是跟你客氣一下，你說 yep 就可以了。
22. dirty work 卑鄙的工作； 討厭的工作
A: All right. You go ahead and sign this paper and I'll do thedirty work。
A: 好吧！ 你就把這個(gè)東西(紙)簽了， 剩下來的“下流的工作”就交給我了。
B: (It) Sounds good to me。
B: 聽起來不錯(cuò)！
"go ahead" 在美語中很常用， 除了“進(jìn)行去做”的意思， 還有其它的用法， 以后再看。
"dirty work" 在此指的是一些沒人要作的扮壞人的事。我有一個(gè)朋友遇人不淑， 室友出去旅行一去不回(并不是死掉)，卻不來電話， 也不付他該付的房租。三個(gè)月后這個(gè)朋友氣炸了， 就向房東提出要另找室友的要求， 房東就請(qǐng)這位朋友填一張紙，然后把他室友的東西搬到別的地方去了。這個(gè)房東作的就是這里說的 "dirty work" 了。
