Protesters Demand Greater Rights for Illegal Immigrants
Protesters have begun new marches in the United States to demand greater rights for more than 11 million illegal immigrants. Demonstrators wearing white t-shirts and waving American flags paraded today (Monday) in Atlanta as part of the National Day of Action for Immigration Justice. Marches also were planned in Washington, D.C. and more than 100 other cities.
Some 350-thousand people demonstrated in (the southern city of) Dallas on Sunday, and protests were held in several other cities.
The marches are the latest in a series of protests against a House of Representatives proposal that would classify illegal immigrants as felons. The House bill also would tighten border security and impose heavy fines on companies that employ illegal immigrants. Critics say the proposal is unfairly aimed at mostly Hispanic immigrants who enter the country to find jobs.
