Vietnamese Lawmakers Elect New Parliamentary Leader in Reshuffle
Vietnamese lawmakers have elected a new parliamentary leader as part of a government reshuffle by the ruling Communist Party. Hanoi Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong was appointed today (Monday) as chairman of Vietnam's national assembly.
The 62-year-old Trong is one of the government's leading enforcers of Marxist ideology. He replaces Nguyen Van An, who helped transform Vietnam's parliament from a rubber-stamp body into a forum for lively debate. An is one of three top leaders who resigned Saturday to clear the way for a younger generation of Communist leaders to assume the government's top positions. Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and President Tran Duc Luong also resigned.
Prime Minister Khai, who is 72, has nominated his deputy, Nguyen Tan Dung, to succeed him. The 56-year old Dung has held a number of senior government positions.
