Hi, everyone, welcome again to Radio English on Sunday. This is Bruce.
    / And this is Peter.
/ Welcome today to Unit Seven on page fifty one of your book. Today we're going to take a rather long journey to the Southern Hemisphere to take a look at the Delights of the South Island. What Island? South Island. There're tens of thousands of islands around the world, but after reading today's program, you should be familiar with South Island in New Zealand, and you'll probably want to take a trip there. Why? let's find out this we begin reading through today's lesson.
I'll read the first paragraph, and then Peter and I will go back to explain the more interesting and useful features in it.
One of the odder coincidences of physical geography is the fact that there are two double islands, roughly the same size, positioned at each other's antipodes, or farthest-distant point. The islands of England and Ireland in the Northern Hemisphere and the islands of North Island and South Island in the southern Hemisphere are just such a coincidence. The first two islands comprise the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland (or Eire), and the second two islands comprise New Zealand. Among these four islands, there can be no doubt that South Island is the least polluted and most spectacularly scenic of them all.
You should be able to tell from the first paragraph that this is a kind of geography lesson, we are talking about two double islands or two pairs of islands in the world. The first pair is in the Northern Hemisphere, in fact in the northern Atlantic Ocean, the Islands of England and Ireland. The other pair is far away, in fact at the farthest possible distance, or the antipodes, as far as you can go away from England or Ireland, you can find New Zealand, which is comprised the two islands, north island and south island. The latter island is the subject of today's lesson.
/ In terms of this discussion...I think we have two words here, Line one here, coincidence. Usually you have this expression, "what a coincidence!", and in what situation you would use expressions like this?
/ When two things happen at the same time that we really didn't expect. That's a very useful phrase, Peter. What a coincidence! I can hardly believe that I ran into my two best friends downtown in the same department store.
/ Also, in terms of grammar, perhaps we'll, you know, discuss more, about this word "comprise".
/ Mmm-humm. Well, "comprise" means to include or to be made up of. For example, in high school, our class was comprised of twenty girls and eighteen boys.
/ be comprised of, or maybe you can say, fifty students comprise this class.
/ Right. Or maybe you could say the European Union comprises a number of nations.
---comprise---其實(shí)就是跟to consist of, be composed of差不多。
To consist of; be composed of:

There's much competition to make such a claim. The Island of England, politically constituting England, Scotland, and Wales of the United Kingdom, is dotted with country villages set alongside rivers and lakes. There are not very tall but nonetheless rugged mountains in the north, and endless miles of rocky coastline that seem mystical. Island, too, is a paradise of greenery, with far fewer people than populous England and even more quaint villages scattered among its low-lying hills and forever green fields. North Island in New Zealand sports a balmy climate, and the beaches to make use of it. One beach alone is more than one hundred fifty kilometers long, and with relatively few people on its shores. One can pretend one is at the very end of the earth. Volcanoes, large lakes, and quickly flowing rivers traverse the land. Given the beauty of these three islands, what makes South Island so special?
Remember that we finished the first paragraph saying that South Island is the most beautiful of these four islands. Well, that'll be easy to say, if the other three islands were, in a word, ugly. But in fact, the islands of England, Ireland and north island of New Zealand, are very beautiful islands in themselves. So we really have a lot to prove here, if we say that south island is the most beautiful of the four, and we'll try to do that in the next paragraph.
/ there's much competition to make such a claim. 6:50 這個(gè)claim本來指的是“宣稱”。這個(gè)字當(dāng)動詞用的時(shí)候可以表示“奪走生命”,如果說 the flood claimed fifty people, 這是不對的。這個(gè)claim在這個(gè)用法的時(shí)候后面只能跟life, 所以我們應(yīng)該說 the flood claimed fifty lives. 這個(gè)字作名詞的時(shí)候,代表一個(gè)權(quán)利,to have a claim on something, ---He has a claim on that house. 這個(gè)房子的主權(quán)是屬于他的,注意用on. 也就是 be entitled to, He is entitled to that car.
    ---be entitled to 有...的資格 有權(quán)
    ---entitle,
To give a name or title to.
    給…題名或命名
To furnish with a right or claim to something:
    給…權(quán)利或給…資格:
The coupon entitles the bearer to a 25 percent savings. Every citizen is entitled to equal protection under the law.
    債券占其所有人存款總額的百分之二十五。每個(gè)公民都有權(quán)依法受同等保護(hù)
    (常與to連用)授權(quán)
Officers are entitled to travel first class.
    官員有權(quán)坐頭等艙。
This preferential ticket entitles you to travel first class.
    "憑這張優(yōu)惠票,你可以坐頭等艙旅行。"
    定名
After reading an article entitled 'Cigarette Smoking and Your Health' I lit a cigarette to calm my nerves.
    "讀完一篇題為<吸煙與您的健康>的文章后,我點(diǎn)燃了一支香煙,以便使我緊張的神經(jīng)能平靜下來。"
    /greenery,
/ Oh, yeah, usually we see the adjective, green, but we can make a place which is full of green things or those things which are green themselves, we make them a noun, greenery.
Some countries which have a lot of rain, of course have a lot of greenery.
/ 綠色植物,森林,花草之類的。 The leavy leaves are really beautiful.
/ leavy, right, the word comes from "leaf--pl, leaves", --there're beautiful leaves on the trees in the fall, then we take leaf+y, leavy, we so have an adjective, which refers, like greenery, to a place that is full of beautiful plants.
/ North Island in New Zealand sports a balmy climate, --sports--does this mean this island want to do some exercise or something?
/ Well, they are the same word, but this is an interesting use of the word "sport", to sport something, in this sentence it means to "show off", or to do something proudly. For example, if Peter buys a new hat and he really likes this hat and likes to wear it everywhere he goes, we'll say that he's sporting his new hat.
---v.tr. To display or show off.
Ok, let's go ahead now. We are on the next page, we start the single word, plenty.
Plenty. For those who like mountains, South Island is sure to please. (Mount) Cook at three thousand seven hundred sixty four meters is its highest peak, with sixteen others above three thousand meters. Naturally, many local and foreign mountain climbers come here for the challenge of these Southern Alps. In addition, there is an extensive glacier system, endless forests, and innumerable lakes throughout this highland area. Some of the world's best mountain scenery is available within the five hundred kilometer long chain of the Southern Alps.
This first (third?) paragraph describing South Island, points out it's very high mountains. We'll know these aren't the highest mountains in the world, but they are high enough to attract a lot of climbers. And in this Southern Alps region, the Alps are the mountains in Europe, but when the Europeans went to New Zealand, South Island, they felt that the mountains of south island were very similar to their own Alps in Europe, and they call them the Southern Alps. And there we can see forests and lakes and even some glaciers.
    / glacier, n, 冰河,冰川
/ plenty, he has plenty of friends to help him, 不能說his friends are plenty, 就不對了。應(yīng)該說 his friends are plentiful.
    He has plenty of money,
    His money is plentiful.
Also, please pay attention to this word, line two from the bottom, somewhere the middle to ...you see, scenery,
/ Yeah, I know you will mention this word.
/ Because this word is something that usually Chinese students may probably make some mistake about, right?
/ Yes. Because there's another word, scene, and the two words are often confused. The way I like to teach these two words is, a scene is like a picture, or photograph, "scenery" is like a movie, there're many things that we see all the time in the movie, or when traveling, and then we can say, the scenery in the mountains is very beautiful. 不可數(shù)。But, "scene", we can count. --there're two scenes on my trip that I will never forget. The setting sun over the ocean, and that volcano, those two scenes, or pictures, were my favorite.
    ---這個(gè)在中級講座中也講到過很多次。
可是Bruce你經(jīng)常這樣講我, hey, you just made a scene, 這是什么意思?。?BR>    / ..That's why I never take Peter out with me when I go out to eat in a restaurant. He always is making a scene when he's eating, that means that...(這時(shí)Peter發(fā)出了很響很難聽的聲音), yeah...that reminds me, you can't believe this guy, so he makes a scene in the restaurant, that means he will do something which attracts attention in a negative way. 即現(xiàn)丑,丟人現(xiàn)眼的事情,to make a scene.
Ok, the next paragraph also tells us more about the South Island. 1445
Perhaps you prefer the sea? South Island is not only an island, but many tiny islets can be found off its coastline. Great, deep sea fishing, scuba diving, and snorkeling can be had, though the waters here are cooler than those of North Island. Remember, in the southern hemisphere as we go north, it gets warmer. As fewer people live on South Island than North Island, those who crave solitude and pristine beaches will be amazed at their luck here. With almost no heavy industry on South Island, the air, water, and land are all free of pollution. The local seafood is therefore, clean, plentiful and never ending.
I can't wait to go there, this place sounds better and better. Our last paragraph we talked about the mountains and now we are talking about the sea around South Island, sounds like a great place for sports, and if you don't like to be around crowds, and if you like good seafood, this is the place for you.
    / crave, 有時(shí)候是crave something, 有時(shí)候是crave for something,
/ We don't really need the word "for", most people today don't use it.
/ 這個(gè)crave通常用作及物動詞,直接跟名詞,但long 作“渴望”解的時(shí)候一定要跟for, to long for something. "longing" 則可以作形容詞用,he is longing for something.
    crave:
To have an intense desire for.
    對…熱切希望
    See: desire
    To need urgently; require.
    急需;需要
    To beg earnestly for; implore.
    懇求;哀求
    solitude:
The state or quality of being alone or remote from others.
    單獨(dú)獨(dú)自一人或遠(yuǎn)離他人的狀態(tài)或性質(zhì)
    A lonely or secluded place.
    偏僻處,隱居處
    pristine: adj,
Remaining in a pure state; uncorrupted by civilization.
    質(zhì)樸的,純潔的保持純潔狀態(tài)的;未被文明腐蝕的
Remaining free from dirt or decay; clean:
    新鮮的或清潔的;干凈的:
    pristine mountain snow.
    山上潔白的雪
Of, relating to, or typical of the earliest time or condition; primitive or original.
    太古的,原始的早時(shí)期或初狀態(tài)的、與之相關(guān)的或以之為典型的;太古的或原始的
    scuba, n, 水中呼吸器,
Let's continue. As we talk more about South Island,
Do healthful climate interests you? South Island is a place to be, its temperate climate sees little snow except in the highlands and mountains areas. Like Ireland and England, there're no extremes of temperature, either. Summers are warm, not hot, and winters are brisk rather than freezing. The fresh air is sometimes humid from the abundant of rainfall of this area. Every season invites the nature lover to get out and be active in the countryside.
More good news about South Island. You will not freeze there and you will not sweat there, either, very often. It has a very healthful climate.
/ You will not sweat there even.
/ Don't sweat it! 俚語的用法,means don't worry about this, it's not important, it's not that big problem, take it easy.
Alright, let's finish up with our last paragraph.
Of course, South Island is not for everyone. For those who need busy, crowded, noisy, and polluted cities, this southern outpost will surely disappoint. For those who enjoy pressure and stress, South Island will leave them empty handed. And for those who would rather stay at home, or in an office in front of a computer screen, or in the thumping, smoke-filled dance floor discos, some of the world's best natural scenery will never entice them away. For the rest of us, though, South Island is the world's best kept secret. If nature's paradise sounds alluring, make a point of visiting South Island.
Well, there are people who do love noisy and crowded lifestyles like living in big cities. For those who love nature, you will find it hard to find a better place than South Island.
/ entice somebody to do something,
/ Well, entice is a very positive word, means to attract somebody. "Seduce" means that you try to attract somebody usually for sex. ---reduce, 減小,縮小,跟seduce一字之差。
    alluring, 誘人的,迷人的,嫵媚的,吸引人的,
/ Given the beauty of these three islands, ...What does this "given" mean?
/ Well, here "given" means either "in view of" or "considering". For example, we sometimes say something like "given Peter's age, it's amazing, he can still work."
    / haha. 所以given在這種情況下表示“想到,考慮到”的意思,與considering是差不多的。雖然這個(gè)字這里看上去是個(gè)分詞,但事實(shí)上是一個(gè)介詞的用法。
Given his young age, he's doing it exceptionally well.
Considering his young age, he's doing it exceptionally well.
In view of his young age, he's doing it exceptionally well.
    seduce, entice,
    tempt,
/ Well, this can be used with people or things, for example, whow! This dessert looks tempting. If a person says this at a meal, we know that the person maybe shouldn't eat so much, but, whow, that dessert looks so good, it's hard to resist.
    / 誘人的,inviting.
