As critical deadlines for naming presidential electors loom, a seemingly divided U.S. Supreme Court peppered attorneys for Al Gore and George W. Bush with questions today in a case that could determine who finally wins the White House.
The justices seemed troubled at times by the cases being presented on each side, lobbing pointed questions at lawyers for Bush, Gore and Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris this morning in a case that will go down in history books as Bush vs. Gore.
The high court's ruling, expected within days if not hours, could finally bring an end to the monthlong presidential battle. In the 90-minute session, oral arguments focused on whether Florida counties should resume vote counting — which was halted by the justices just 24 hours after the state Supreme Court had ordered that it begin last Friday.
