US Charges Indian Man With Smuggling Weapons Technology
U.S. government prosecutors have charged a businessman with shipping sensitive U.S. weapons technology to India in violation of export controls. Parthasarathy Sudarshan, chief executive of Cirrus Electronics, pleaded not guilty Tuesday at a U.S. federal court in Washington.
Prosecutors accuse him and three colleagues with shipping heat-resistant memory chips and microprocessors to three Indian government agencies, via Singapore. The Indian agencies are involved in the research and production of spacecraft, ballistic missiles, and fighter jets.
U.S. Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Wainstein says the arrests have shut down a network of technology smugglers that undermined U.S. national security.
U.S. federal agents arrested Sudarshan and his global sales manager on March 23rd. A company official based in Bangalore and another based in Singapore have also been indicted in connection with the charges.
