A Thai court has sentenced a Swiss man to 10 years in prison for spay-painting graffiti over images of Thailand's revered king.
Fifty-seven year old Oliver Rudolf Jufer had pleaded guilty to five counts of lese majeste, the crime of insulting the monarchy.
Jufer had faced a maximum sentence of 75 years, but the court in Thailand's northern city of Chiang Mai gave a reduced prison term Thursday because he had confessed.
The Swiss was arrested in the city last December after surveillance cameras caught him spraying black paint onto portraits of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The 79-year old monarch is deeply loved in Thailand and regarded by many Thais as semi-divine.
A defense lawyer says Jufer was intoxicated at the time of his crime.
