Japan's FM Says Japanese More Likely to Succeed in Middle East Diplomacy than Westerners
Japanese media are reporting that Foreign Minister Taro Aso says the Japanese with, in his words, their "yellow faces" are more likely to succeed at Middle East diplomacy than their "blonde, blue-eyed" counterparts in the West.
Japanese media say Aso made the remarks in a speech Wednesday, in which he also said that the Japanese, unlike Americans, have no history of exploitation or violence in the region. Japan recently hosted talks involving officials from Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian territories.
Aso has made diplomatically controversial comments in the past. Earlier in his career, he said he hoped to make Japan the kind of country where people he called "rich Jews" would want to live.
The conservative minister is an avowed nationalist and has called Japan "a one-race nation."
