Pet Owners Use Tough Love On Fat Cats
Pet lovers and vets say they're struggling with a new weighty problem: fat cats. The porky pets run the risk of becoming diabetic, leaving responsible owners with a challenge to change their cat's diet and exercise habits. Sky's Ruth Liptrot reports.

You think you're doing your cat a favor by treating him, but actually you are storing up enough trouble to give you both pause for a thought. Here is something to museon.
"This is Pavarotti, and as a Burmese he's three times more likely than other breeds to develop diabetes. But there are other factors that he has in common with those humans. He's male. He doesn't do much exercise, and he's a bit fat. Come on, Pavarotti, sort it out."
But he's not the only one. The research found that one in 230 cats have the potentially fatal disease. An increasing number of the groggy moggies at London's Blue Cross VeterinaryCenter are made up of diabetics. Charlie is just one of them.
"I think the overweight problem is the main factor behind the diabetes. I mean, we don't see a lot of differences between male or female cats. And I'm not really sure why the male cats are more targeted by the diabetes. Possibly they are actually more targeted because of their laziness and their overweightness. "
"So you think the males are more likely to be lazy and obesed."
    "Quite possibly."
How to make a fat cat more of a Jack Sprat? Get a load off that.
"You can buy toys that are hollow and you can put the food in that and make the cat work for it by chasing the ball around. The other thing is to put the ball of food on top of the stairs or to hide it behind the couch or different places around the house and make it more of a game for the cat to find the food. And of course playing with toys is really important as well. "
So there you have it. Charlie says make them thin for their super. But what Charlie says and Charlie does aren't necessarily the same think.
