Jesse Barron owned a store selling old furniture. Jesse was known to thrive on finding valuable antiques. He prided himself on his thrift, and loved the thrill of hunting for new items by himself. Often, he would leave the store in the care of a long term employee, and drive into the country-side looking for yard sales. For him it was like therapy. Jesse would often testify that those rides were the most fun he’d ever had. It was on one such weekend, when he first saw a ghost. The story would terrify even the bravest person.
It was early evening, and he was in farm territory, when the car got a flat tire. This was an accident that would terminate the trip, and begin his adventure. There was an old farmhouse nearby, so Jesse went to ask for help. On the threshold he met a tense old man, named Ms. Bradbury. She told him that the nearest gas station was an hour’s walk away. She said he could stay in her house, and go in the morning. At first Jesse was tentative about this, but Ms. Bradbury gave him dinner to satisfy his hunger and thirst. He spent one night there, sleepless and thoughtful. He wrapped himself in a thermal blanket, and listened to the clock’s tick. In the morning while preparing to go he came across a beautiful carpet. It was woven with a rose and thorn pattern, with a kind of silken thread and the texture was in credible. Jesse decided to ask Ms. Bradbury if he might buy the carpet, but could not find her. He decided to take the carpet, and leave in its place a rare silver dollar that he had bought the day before. It was just about the same price as the carpet. He thrust the carpet into his car, and left the silver dollar on the floor where the carpet had seen, and then walked off to find the gas station.
When Jesse met the gas station owner and explained his story, a tide of fear washed over the man’s face. He said that the Bradbury house had burnt down years before, and Ms. Bradbury had died in the fire. His thesis was, Jesse had seen a ghost. The owner drove him back to his car, and he was shocked to find it parked in front of a burned down house. They walked through the ashes. There where the front hall would have seen, sitting on the floor, was a silver dollar
