I remember high school like it was yesterday. At my high school, which was located near the local harbour, there was a social hierarchy that people lived by.
All of the beautiful girls and handsome guys were in the ‘cool’ group, then the sports people were in one group, then the average kids were in a group, then the poor kids and kids with a handicap were in the bottom group. Nobody liked there being groups at school because it hindered the learning. I didn’t think that the ‘cool’ kids should harass the poor kids or throw the kid with a handicap in the hedge near the school. I always wished that all of the students could get along and live in harmony, but my father said that school had a long heritage of these groups and it wouldn’t be easy to change.
The head of the most popular group in our school was called Adam. Everyday, he and his friends tried to hatch a new plan to pick on people from the other groups. So, sometimes going to school was a real hazard! I think doing the mean things to other groups was the highlight of Adam’s day. I can remember him doing so many terrible things to the other groups at my school. One time, Adam and his friends took a heap of dirty, smelly towels from the gym and put them all in my friend’s locker. Another time, Adam picked up one of the smaller students at our school and hoisted him up and hung him on the top door hinge.
Well, one day, Adam and his friends hinted that they wanted to do something terrible to me. But I was tired of all of the fighting, and I told him that I thought that we should heal the problems among the groups at our school. Adam and his friends just started to laugh at me, and Adam took a big, harsh swing at me and hit me in the jaw. It hurt, but I could see all of the other students that Adam and his group had picked on all looking at me. I was the first person who had stood up to this gang, and everybody hoped that I could make a change. So, I tried to harness all of the energy I had and I hit Adam back as hard as I could. I guess it hurt him so much because he ran away with much haste and never bothered the other students again.
