) g" n8 y4 y- Y2 DFirst of all, let me say that the review of an application involves GRE and TOEFL scores, letters of recommendation, your research experience, your statement of purpose, and other related documents. No single score such as 3.0 on the Analytical Writing would keep you from consideration. When we review any international student, there is always a desire to determine if the student is ready to study in an English-speaking environment. That means that the committee looks at the GRE Verbal, GRE Analytical Writing, and TOEFL scores very carefully.

We have a significant number of international students in the PhD programs in the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. This fall we had 715 PhD students, and 46% were international students. Many of the international students are from China, and that includes students in Materials Science.: z* Q$ t6 q. A' b: C) c

Professor Lincoln Lauhon is the director of graduate studies in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. 3 {- b8 V# r3 I* J$ CWhen students have two sets of GRE scores, the faculty reviewers will look at both sets of scores and put primary emphasis on the higher scores. I do not want to add pressure, but I do want to tell you that 55% of all of the 2009 MS and PhD applicants to the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science scored 800 on the GRE Quantitative. Primary emphasis is placed on this single score and not the total. That being said, I will tell you that The Graduate School carefully monitors the TOEFL and GRE Verbal scores of international applicants. The Graduate School want to see at least 100 on the Internet Based TOEFL. 6 u" U O. J" V5 _: p
