Our national flag and the Olympics
Ladies and gentlemen, the topic of my speech is our national flag and Olympics
It is a great pleasure to share my view on that topic with you.
When I was in primary school, I heard nothing about Olympics and what moved me most was the short moment while I was standing in front of rising national flag, singing national anthem .I could feel my blood was so boiling that I could not help thinking about the hardship our country had been through, which inspired me to study much harder in honor of the brave soldier who never hesitated to risk their lives in wining wars and bettering life for national people. But to me, national flag had nothing to do with Olympics. What was Olympics? I had no idea at that time.
When it came to middle school, I concerned no matches but the ones with Chinese players. When our players succeeded in achieving the champions and stood in the highest sidestep with national flag being raised and national anthem being sung in Olympic stadiums, we cheered for them and smiled with tears flowing down like two streams. If they failed, there was no national flag nor anthem but tears and sighs. We even wouldn’t have any chance to watch their heart-struck facial expressions nor shared the sorrow with them because the champions were always the highlights of TV camera. Ladies and gentlemen, losers didn’t deserve attentions of others? Was that the real Olympic spirit? I had no sense. At that time national flag in Olympic stadiums represented the great achievement we made .
And now, I am exposed to a lot more Olympic news around the world. We care about not only China but also other countries.Even some youngsters prefer other football teams to China’s football team. And at this period, what strikes me most is the people who unfortunately hurt themselves when taking part in competitions. Because of that some athletes never have any chance to compete in Olympic stadiums any more. But they never give up their efforts to strive forward, to live an independent life and to continue inspiring others to be swifter, higher and stronger. Sang Lan, a famous Chinese gymnast who hurt herself at the stage in 1998, is a typical example. From her faces, you can never sense the darkness of life but sunny smiles. All people admit she stands for the great image of Chinese people.
Ladies and Gentlemen, no matter who you are , no matter where you are from, please take a few seconds to be proud of those people who unfortunately hurt them in the competitions. The spirit of Olympics goes far beyond sports. It is an active way of living, a demonstration of self confidence and a presentation of courage. The Olympic spirit has enlivened and will continue enlivening people in the world, including those who stand behind Olympics. And that is the real Olympic spirit. Sang Lan said: “Our national flag lives in my heart forever and Olympic flame is never out.”
Obviously, that’s true. Olympic flame is never out and will be brighter in Beijing 2008 Olympics.
Thank you very much ladies and gentlemen.
