高級英語口語200講第11講

字號(hào):

    第11講:shoe is on the other foot; work hand in glove
    美國的成語或俗語和其他語言一樣同生活中的各個(gè)方面有關(guān)。有一些和食品有關(guān),有的來自撲克牌游戲,還有的和穿著有聯(lián)系。今天我們要講的兩個(gè)習(xí)慣用語是和鞋子、手套有關(guān)系的。首先,我們要介紹的是"The shoe is on the other foot"。
    The shoe is on the other foot的意思是:形勢已經(jīng)完全不同了。下面這個(gè)例子就能夠說明the shoe is on the other foot在日常會(huì)話中是怎么用的:
    例句-1: "Back in school we made fun of Jones because we thought he spent too much time studying instead of having fun. Now the shoe is on the other foot -- he's made lots of money and the rest of us are just barely making enough to feed our families."
    這句話翻成中文就是說:"以前在學(xué)校里念書的時(shí)候,我們老是笑話瓊斯,認(rèn)為他這個(gè)人老是念書,不會(huì)玩。可是,現(xiàn)在情況就完全不同了。他賺了不少錢,而我們這些人的收入只夠維持家計(jì)而已。"
    下面的一個(gè)例子是一個(gè)球迷在夸耀當(dāng)?shù)氐陌羟蜿?duì):
    例句-2: "For the last ten years the Tigers have been the worst team in the league: we've finished down at the bottom. But now the shoe is on the other foot: we have all these good young players and we're beating everybody else in the whole league."
    這句話的意思是:"我們這個(gè)地方的球隊(duì)老虎隊(duì)十年前是參加聯(lián)賽的所有球隊(duì)中最次的一個(gè),比賽結(jié)果老是最后一名?,F(xiàn)在可不同了。我們球隊(duì)的隊(duì)員都很年輕,球藝也好。他們把其他球隊(duì)一個(gè)個(gè)全打敗了。"
    現(xiàn)在我們來講一個(gè)和手套有關(guān)的習(xí)慣用語: To work hand in glove。To work hand in glove的意思是密切合作。我們來舉個(gè)例子吧:
    例句-3: "The local police are working hand in glove with the FBI to find the bank robbers."
    這是說:"當(dāng)?shù)氐木煺诤吐?lián)邦調(diào)查局密切合作設(shè)法找到那些搶劫銀行的罪犯。"
    Hand in glove這個(gè)詞匯也經(jīng)常用在反面的場合,形容一些人合謀犯罪等。下面就是一個(gè)例子:
    例句-4: "I read in the paper about this customs officer they arrested at the airport. They caught him working hand in glove with a gang of smugglers to bring diamonds into the country without paying duty."
    這個(gè)人說:"我在報(bào)紙上看到有關(guān)那個(gè)在機(jī)場被逮捕的海關(guān)官員的消息。他們發(fā)現(xiàn)他和一些走私者密切合作,把鉆石帶進(jìn)來而不繳關(guān)稅。"
    上面我們講了兩個(gè)美國人常用的詞匯。第一個(gè)是 the shoe is on the other foot,這是指情況完全不同的意思。另外一個(gè)是 to work hand in glove,這是密切合作的意思。
    第12講:follow your nose; pay through the nose
    今天我們要講兩個(gè)由鼻子,也就是nose 這個(gè)字組成的俗語。鼻子是我們嗅覺和呼吸的工具,是人體的一個(gè)重要組成部份。大概也正因?yàn)槿绱?,英語里許多常用的習(xí)慣用語都和nose這個(gè)字有聯(lián)系。比如說,你到華盛頓來訪問,要上白宮去參觀,可是走在路上好像迷失了方向。于是,你就在馬路上問人怎么去白宮。你得到的回答可能就是:
    例句-1: "Turn left at the next corner and then follow your nose -- you can't miss it."
    這人說:"到前面的路口向左轉(zhuǎn),然后一直走就到了,你不會(huì)看不到的。"
    很明顯,這句句子里"follow your nose"的意思就是"一直走"。 Follow your nose還可以解釋為利用嗅覺找到什么東西。例如:
    例句-2: "You say you're looking for the French Bakery? Just walk two blocks north, turn left, and you can smell that wonderful smell of fresh bread baking: just follow your nose and it will bring you right to the front door."
    這人說:"你是說你在找那個(gè)法國面包店嗎?往北走過兩條街,然后向左轉(zhuǎn),你就會(huì)聞到那烤面包的香味。隨著香味走就會(huì)把你帶到那面包店的門口了。"
    "Follow your nose"在這句句子里著重的是嗅覺,而不是方向。今天我們要講的第二個(gè)常用的習(xí)慣用語是: Pay through the nose。 Pay就是付錢的意思。按字面上來解釋,pay through the nose就是通過鼻子來付錢,這聽起來似乎很痛苦。而實(shí)際上,pay through the nose的確切意思是付出比真正的價(jià)值高得多的錢,或者說付出的錢實(shí)在太多而感到心痛。我們來舉個(gè)例子吧:
    例句-3: "My brother Bob borrowed the money to open his restaurant five years ago when the interest rate was so high, so he's been paying through the nose ever since."
    這個(gè)人說:"我哥哥在五年前借錢開他那個(gè)飯館的時(shí)候正好利率非常高。所以,他從那時(shí)起就一直在大筆大筆地還債。"
    這樣由于利息高而付許多錢來還債當(dāng)然誰也不愿意??墒?也有人心甘情愿出高價(jià)來買那些他們認(rèn)為值得買的東西。下面一個(gè)例子就可以說明這一點(diǎn):
    例句-4: "Life is funny. When the famous dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh was alive, nobody wanted to buy his pictures. But now rich people will pay through the nose for one, sometimes more than five million dollars."
    這句話的意思是:"人生實(shí)在是很有趣的。當(dāng)那位有名的荷蘭畫家凡高還活著的時(shí)候,沒有人要買他的畫??墒牵F(xiàn)在那些有錢人卻愿意出高價(jià)買他的畫,有時(shí)候一張畫就要五百多萬美元。"
    今天我們講了兩個(gè)和nose有關(guān)的常用詞匯。第一個(gè)是follow the nose。Follow the nose可以指"一直走",也可以解釋為隨著你聞到的味道去找什么東西,或什么地方。今天講的第二個(gè)和nose有關(guān)的詞匯是to pay through the nose。To pay through the nose是付出很高價(jià)錢的意思。
