For the BBC the challenge has to be how to maintain our editorial standards of accuracy, independence, impartiality, balance, and fairness while harnessing the power and reach of these new technologies. In essence: how do we maintain the hard won trust of audiences while allowing so many voices to play across our output?

While hosting so many views, opinions and conversations and allowing people to speak their minds we must always be clear about the distinction between BBC journalism and what is comment and opinion expressed by users and contributors. We must be open about what we know and what we do no know - and in a fast moving world what you do not know is often as important as what you do know. If we get something wrong we must say so and we must allow ourselves to be challenged.

We must involve and engage with our audiences in an honest dialogue while never compromising on those core values which attracted people to us in the first place. We believe the BBC and other long established broadcasters have an important role to play in this changing media landscape. But we must never under estimate the speed of change, the power of the new individual voices which play across our output and the web and the opportunities presented by a newly empowered and demanding public.
