世界上到底有沒有鬼？真正看見過鬼的人似乎也不多，可是幾千年來，許多人一聽鬼的故事就毛骨悚然。今天我們要講兩個(gè)和“鬼”這個(gè)字有關(guān)的俗語，可是大家千萬別害怕，你絕不會(huì)見到鬼的。“鬼”這個(gè)字在英文里就是：ghost。
根據(jù)字典里的解釋，ghost就是看不見的幽靈，人死了，他的靈魂也就離開了人體。今明兩天要講的俗語就是這個(gè)意思。我們先來介紹：to give up the ghost。To give up就是“放棄”。一個(gè)人放棄了靈魂不就是死了嗎？To give up the ghost的意思也就是：“ 死”。下面我們來舉個(gè)例子：
"My poor old aunt was in bed with cancer for six months before she finally gave up the ghost."
這個(gè)人說：“我那可憐的老阿姨得了癌，在床上躺了半年后終于去世了。”
To give up the ghost不一定指人，它還可以用來說別的東西，就像那些磨損很利害無法修理的機(jī)器：
"I need money to buy a new car. My old one is twelve years old and I'm afraid it's ready to give up the ghost."
這個(gè)人說：“我需要錢去買一輛新車。我那輛老的汽車已經(jīng)開了十二年，恐怕是要完蛋了?！?BR> ointment
