Manners are important to happy relations among people. No one likes a person with bad manners. A person with good manners never laughs at people when they are in trouble. Instead, he tries to offer help. When he asks for something, he says “please” and when he receives something, he always says “thanks”. He does not interrupt other people when they are talking. He does not talk loudly or laugh loudly in public. When he sneezes or spits, he uses a handkerchief. As a sutdent, it is a bad manner to come late to class. Why Are Many Animals Dying out?
There are many reasons for animals dying out, but the most important one is the part that humans have played. First, many animals have been killed for food. Second, many of the places where animals used to live have been destroyed. Wet land has been turned into field. More and more trees in the forests have been cut down, but few trees are planted. If You Want to Be Strong and Healthy
If you want to be strong and healthy, you must pay attention to the following. First, you should get enough sleep, and do morning exercises every day. Have meals at regular time and do not hurry when you eat. Remember to sit straight when you read and write. Breathe in as much fresh air as you can. When you come home from school, go out into the open air and play for an hour or so. Keep your body clean. Have a cold shower every morning. Wash your hands before meals.
If you do all these above, you will be strong and healthy.

Trees Are Important to Use
Trees are very useful to people. They provide us with wood and other products. They give us shade and they help to prevent drought and floods.
Unfortunately, in many parts of our country, people haven't realized the importance of trees. They cut them down at will. They are usually too lazy or too careless to plant and look after new trees. As a result, the forests continue to disappear.
Where there are no trees the rain falls on the surface, causing floods, and carries away with the rich topsoil, in which crops grow so well. When all the topsoil is gone, nothing remains but worthless deserted.
The big floods of 1998, in parts of China, have already taught us a good lesson. So every one of us must love trees, protect forests, and keep on planting trees each year.

Smoking and Health
Today cigarette smoking is a widespread habit all over the world. It was reported recently that smokers make up one quarter of the world population, while in China, 33.9 precent above the age of 15 are smokers. It's a very serious problem because not only the old, the youth, but also middle school students and girls have been engaged in smoking.
Many heavy smokers say they cannot leave off, although they know smoking is harmful to their health and they have tried again and again to stop.
Scientific research shows that smoking is not only harmful to smokers themselves, but also a threat to public health, especially to women and children. The poisonous gas from smoking is one of the major causes of many kinds of diseases. Therefore, many countries have worked out laws forbidding smokers to smoke in public places such as cinemas, hospitals and stations.

How to Reduce the City Present Population?
Our modern city is too crowded, and to solve the problem, three proposals are put forward. Most people believe that we should fist practise the policy “Late Marriage” and “One Couple, One Child” in order to reduce the birth rate. Secondly, the city government must have a tight control over rural people entering cities to engage themselves in trade or do various physical jobs so as to lessen the pressure on the city caused by the increased population. Finally more and more people suggest that living blocks with shopping centers, schools, hospitals as well as cinemas and theatres round them or even satellite towns should be built in city suburbs or the countryside round the cities. In this way city citizens will be encouraged to move there to live and work. If these three proposals are well carried out, the city population will be greatly reduced.

Most students of our school, including me, think it is not right to build a chemical works near our school. Although the works will make a lot of money for our city, we do think it will do us more harm than good. The drinking water will be badly polluted. Of course, they have promised to do something to prevent the water from being polluted. But it is far from enough. On the other hand, the air over the city will be polluted, too. We'll never be able to breathe the fresh air. How can we live here any longer? What's more, the site of the chemical works has been the only place where we students play games and have sports after school. If it is occupied, we will have no place to play in.

Do “Lucky Numbers” Really Bring Good Luck?
Some people think certain numbers may bring good luck. These numbers include “6”, “8”, “9” and so on. Therefore, when they want to choose a car number or a phone number, they buy the number which ends with these lucky numbers at a higher price.
In my opinion, there are no relations between the so-called lucky numbers and luck. The only key to success on wealth lies in hard work. If we are too dependent on it, we may become lazy or easily discouraged when these numbers proved to be useless. We should believe in our own efforts to struggle for the success.
